Quetta was formerly known as Shalkot and gets its current name from a Pashto word. In the 11th century, the land of Quetta was owned by the Kasi tribe. Throughout its history, Quetta was captured by various rulers including Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni in the 11th century and Ahmed Shah Durrani in the 18th century. Today, Quetta is the capital of Balochistan province and an important trade center between Pakistan and neighboring countries with a population of over 2 million people.
