Editor's Notes

  1. Professionals emphasize the need to teach children with AS social skills because they desperately need social skills to get along in life. Yet the question of whether children with Asperger Syndrome are truly lonely and want friends is a different discussion. Like all children, some are extroverted and others are more withdrawn. Similar to all children, they probably vary in their need for social interactions.
  2. Many AS children might be happier by themselves because social activity has caused them so much pain in the past. In one study, children with Asperger Syndrome could not describe friendship in positive terms such as "a friend is someone who is nice to you." They had only negative experiences to draw from such as "a friend is someone who does not hit you." The AS Children only remembered about how mean people had been to them and seemed to lack any idea of what reciprocal friendship really means .
  3. Some research shows that the more time a person with AS spends socializing, the happier he/she is. Aspies can and do form friendships. When they do, some research shows that even one friendship will enrich their entire social development. Temple Grandin, Liane Holiday Willey and other adults with AS have written about compassionate people who took the time to form friendships with them and by doing so, changed their lives for the better.
  4. ” Hidden Curriculum” are the unwritten social rules that typically developing children learn by watching others. Having good social skills means you are following the “Hidden Curriculum” in your immediate environment be it school, a workplace, your home etc. Not being aware of the “Hidden Curriculum” could also be called having weak social skills.
  5. Watch the Boy Inside video
  6. A student may say words clearly and use long, complex sentences with correct grammar, but still have a communication problem - if he or she has not mastered the rules for social language known as Pragmatics.
  7. A student with AS may need to work on the pragmatics of language along with other interventions to help with their social/emotional development. Pragmatics alone will not help the AS student learn to make and keep friends. Nor will pragmatics help with self-understanding and advocacy.
  8. Finding a place where social skills are explicitly taught, such as an after school or community group or in a class at school, is very important. Otherwise there is often not enough time and not many opportunities to teach and practice these skills in an accepting environment.
  9. The socially challenged youth are with typically developing peers all day and they need a place to be themselves and make mistakes without any repercussions
  10. Get out interview sheets, explain process. Get into groups of 2 and interview each other. We are doing this so you can get the perspective of your students. What is it like to be interviewed? How long do I need to answer a question?
  11. Show the chat time cards – questions, comments, or congratulations. I introduce some lessons that have been successful. Show some of the games that have been used and well liked. Get into groups and either use the chat time cards or play a game.
  12. By the time these students are juniors or seniors in High School they need to be attending their IEP or 504 meetings
  13. E-mail is a great way to communicate it keeps the emotion out and can be used when anyone has the time. Teachers can be hard to reach.
  14. Show some social stories. Spend some time brainstorming situations and get into groups and write a social story. Share them.
  15. Show examples
  16. Things they think, they just say. Need to learnt that there are things you think, but you don’t say out loud and why. Visual showing that those words need to stay in your head.
