The science of Jelly
Sample student response
What we needed to make the Jelly
• Jelly Crystals (any
flavour)
• Water (boiling and
cold)
• Measuring jug
• Bowl
How to make Jelly
How is making jelly teaching us about
science?
Firstly, we begin with a solid.
The jelly crystals are a solid as they
hold their shape and does not flow.
When 250mL of hot water (a liquid) is added to the jelly
crystals (a solid), the heat molecules in the water causes
the jelly crystals to dissolve and turn into a jelly liquefied
mixture.
When
heating the
water in the
kettle, the
temperature
increased
causing a gas
to be
produced.
A gas was produced
because the
molecules in the
water are heated
causing some of the
molecules to break
free. Those
molecules then form
a transparent gas
called steam.
Cold water is then added to the jelly
mixture, however the jelly does not change
states of matter. It is still a liquid.
The jelly mixture is then placed into cups
and put in a refrigerator to ‘set’.
Once the jelly ‘sets’, it changes states of matter. It
changes from a liquid to a solid. This change occurred
due to the change in temperature. As the mixture cooled,
the molecules condensed and the mixture formed a solid
shape.
LEARNING OUTCOME
From this experiment, we learnt how
jelly starts off as a solid, turns into a
liquid (due to a rise in temperature) and
then when cooled (a decrease in
temperature) turned back into a solid.
