Throughout the semester, students have learned of the importance of the interplay amongst different
levels of actors in international relations politics. These various institutions, governments, groups,
and individuals are especially important when considering the issue of human rights. My chosen
article, co–written by Elisabeth Malkin and Gene Palumbo, describes the landmark decision for El
Salvador's Supreme Court to overturn an amnesty law that protected perpetrators of human rights
violations. The ruling of the Supreme Court is based on the grounds that the amnesty is
unconstitutional due to violating international human rights laws (Malkin, Palumba). This event is
particularly important because previous governments ignored these violations that stemmed from
civil unrest. The amnesty law was established in 1992 after a civil war of more than 12 years and
"effectively covers all crimes committed by both sides during the war" (Dolliver, Kanavel, Robeck).

Each person is represented to fit a unique type of behavior as shown by
people during the medieval ages. My attention was drawn to the Wife of
Bath through which Chaucer notes the gender inequalities. Predominantly,
women could either choose to marry and become a childbearing wife or go

She is confident about her knowledge of love, virginity and marriage (after
all she has been married five times). Just as men use the bible to justify
women's oppression, so did the Wife of Bath. She states that double
standards for women are deeply rooted in society. The Wife of Bath

Personal Experience: Guest Lecturer
Overall I found that the series of guest lectures, during the semester, helped me to decide on a clear
career path for myself. Prior to the guest lecturer series I would never have taken Revenue as a
career option and I believed practice was only a stepping–stone to the world of academia. Now I can
see there are several career options available to me upon completion of the masters in taxation and
the non–academia world of tax has interesting aspects. I found it very interesting the differences
between Revenue, private practice and academic speakers. What stood out most to me were the
differences between Revenue and private practice. Reflecting on all of those who spoke with the
class, Feargal O'Rourke, Pat Molen and Leonard Durac were the three that stood out. The
differences that were most prevalent were the way each speaker spoke and the confidence they
portrayed, what each body do, the promotion opportunities and the day–to–day work carried out in
each body.
From the three speakers chosen I found Feargal to be the most confident and to have a lasting
impact on the class as a whole. When the session was over, every classmate I spoke to made a
comment on how impressive he was and that it was no surprise he was promoted so quickly. I
believe this is a result of working in private practice, as it is a competitive in nature and clients will
