1. Course Objective
1. Course Code : UUUK4773
2. Course Name : Introduction to Advocacy
3. Credit : 3
4. Course Type : Elective
5. Synopsis :
The course is designed to introduce undergraduate students to advocacy. The
course will consist of five principal segments. The first segment introduces the
students to the meaning of the term ‘advocacy’ in the legal profession; the two
principal modes by which advocacy skills are employed: written and oral; and how
to begin preparing to engage in advocacy in general. The second segment
provides a rudimentary introduction to legal research, consisting of an
introduction to primary and secondary legal sources. The third segment focuses
upon the written mode of advocacy and outlines the various nuances between
traditional composition and essay writing; and writing a legal brief. Additionally,
the segment focuses on the prioritization of information and the distinct manners
in which to approach legal issues raised on the basis of defending a client’s
interests or engaging the liability of a counter-claimant. The fourth segment will
focus on preparation for oral advocacy; the management of anxiety and various
coping mechanisms; and how to address counter arguments during oral
proceedings. The fifth and final segment will consist of instruction concerning
decorum, dress and body language; how to manage time during presentation of
oral arguments; and how to deal with an aggressive or divergent bench/panel of
judges.
The course introduces undergraduate students to oral and written advocacy
through a problem-based learning approach. The hypothetical issues provided
during the first meeting will be addressed by the undergraduate students, working
as a team, throughout the term and will be assessed in both written and oral
formats. The course will provide undergraduate students with industry-specific
skills and knowledge that can be refined and honed during the remainder of their
undergraduate education. Additionally, the course will expose undergraduate
students to oral advocacy and provide a greater degree of self-awareness
concerning anxiety, time management and physical presentation, all of which are
critical obstacles in advocacy in the field of law. The course will be assessed on the
basis of a written submission from the group and individual assessments of the
oral presentations conducted by the individual members of the group.
