A common theme that has played an important part in my understanding of intercultural
communication is migration; the movement from one part of the world to another. The three
experiences that will be analysed included migrating from England to Australia in 2007, visiting the
Pacific Islands in 2014, and speaking with a newly Spanish migrant in 2017. The reason these three
experiences were chosen are because, due to the story format, they show the development of my

Being in 'borderland' is a matter of performance, that convinces people you are who you say you
are. (Shahram Khosravi 2007, pg. 1–13) As described in observation one, this was true as you must
continually be aware of who is around you, what you say, and how you act. Particularly, when
stopping over in Singapore Airport. Scollon, Scollon, & Jones (2011) say that culture is not one thing
or another, but rather heuristic, meaning 'to find or discover.' Migrating from England to Australia,
we had to integrate ourselves into Australian society, and learn how to be understood in a variety of
social environments. However, my communicative competence was not fully developed, as the

when I did not understand the Australian game he was attempting to involve me in. This was
because in every situation communication is between two people who belong to multiple cultures at

communicative competence, and understanding of Australian culture was questioned when

This is when The Three Wise Man, known in Spanish as "Los Reyes", arrived in Jerusalem to give
their gifts to baby Jesus. On this day there is a Three Kings Day Feast and the children receive gifts.
On New Year's Day of the first year IvГЎn was with me, I told him I was going to take the
Christmas Tree down. He told me I could not take it down yet. When I asked him to explain, he told
me about Three Kings Day and about the huge feast he normally has with his family on that day.
Without IvГЎn knowing, I contacted his mother and asked his mother what she would be cooking
for the family's Three King's Day Feast that year. I went to five different grocery stores between
Huntington and Charleston looking for ingredients. I cooked for nearly twelve hours that day. When
IvГЎn got home from basketball practice that evening, he and I shared the same Three King's Day
Feast that his family was having that night. Ever since then, I have left my tree up until that day. I

When we behave ethnocentrically, we are essentially defending our group membership boundaries
and our usual ways of thinking, feeling, and responding.
According to Hofstede China values collectivism and the Chinese people are very much group
oriented. In school they have to wear uniform to belong in a cohesive group and unity. This is a
very good example of the in–group orientation, as the Chinese people establish their identity and
self–esteem by being a part of a cohesive group and they try to avoid differing from the group. As
our horizon is very much a cultural and social phenomenon it may explain why people who have the
same backgrounds find it easier to communicate and fuse horizons. People from similar backgrounds
are able to communicate in a meaningful way. Our in–groups are also our discourse or knowledge
communities that facilitate a particular identity by creating a sense of belonging, shared world view
and creating norms and rules for how to conceptualize and talk about things (Discourse
communities). Meaning is also tied to identity in the sense that the limitations made by the culture in
which we belong to allow us to distinguish who are 'within' and those who are 'outside'

Intercultural communication is a complex concept that encompasses and links to many other
theories such as racism and verbal and nonverbal communication. Differing languages can
dramatically affect intercultural communication between individuals due to language barriers
however, due to some individuals uneducated and ignorant understanding of differing languages, it

Honduran and Mexican descent. During the interview, I focused on her Honduran culture, as she
was born in Honduras, I asked her a multitude of various questions ranging from formalities in her

Masculine societies tend to focus on competition, strength and dominance, contrarily, feminine

Honduras as a place where relationships tended to be more caring, traditional and supportive. My
next question was about individualism and whether or not Honduras was more of an individualist or

Although Latin American countries like Ecuador are defined as ?Third World? due to their
economical level the lifestyle in Quito, for instance, follows more or less the pattern we know in
this part of the world. People, drive to work, eat out and children go to school. However, this
system functions with different values, customs or schedule. I spent four weeks in Quito at the
Spanish Academy to take transfer credits in this language. During this time period I lived with
an Ecuadorian family that is the parents and their two daughters, which allowed me to interact
with them on a daily basis. The father, Ramon works in the United States and Marcella, 18, the
eldest daughter attends college in Quito where she studies medicine. I found it easy to interact
with Marcella because our age difference is not big and we are both college students. In addition
she is a girl and we could discuss topics that are relevant to our gender, such as fashion or dates.
The fact that this family educational level does not greatly differ from mine helped our
communication, and shaped the messages we were exchanging. We were able to discuss many
topics from politics to sociological and although they are from a different culture, our views were

Intercultural communication competence refers to the ability of an individual to adapt and

1–2). With the increasing diversity at the workplace, school and other social settings, it has become
increasingly important to learn how to communicate with people from a diverse array of cultures.
More importantly, adapting to a more effective intercultural communication competence model
provides us with learning opportunities occasioned by the interaction with people from other
backgrounds. The intercultural communication competence model comes with some key
components including tolerance for uncertainty, self–knowledge, and motivation. The greatest and
most important of these aspects is motivation. An individual must be willing to foster relationships
with people from a different cultural background. If an individual lacks the willingness to promote
intercultural relationships, then other aspects of the intercultural communication model become moot.

comparison to verbal communication, non verbal communication takes a different form in different
cultures. Gestures and facial expressions play a key role in communication. However, each culture
incorporates different types of gestures and disregards others. For example, in most western societies
, it is customary to shake one's hand upon introduction. However, in most oriental countries shaking
one's hand is frown upon, since they believe bowing is the only acceptable type of introduction.
Non–verbal communication includes not only facial expressions and gestures; it also involves
seating arrangements, personal distance, and sense of time. In addition, different norms regarding
the appropriate degree of assertiveness in communicating can add to cultural misunderstandings. For
instance, some white Americans typically consider raised voices to be a sign that a fight has begun,
while some black, Jewish and Italian Americans often feel that an increase in volume is a sign of an
exciting conversation among friends. Thus, some white Americans may react with greater alarm to a
loud discussion than would members of some American ethnic or non–white racial groups.

This level also includes the basic concept of cultural diversities such as bias, ethnocentricity, and
stereotype. The second level is organizing information according to stereotypes. This level is about
to accept the stereotypical characteristics of new cultures. The new cultures that they face will bring
them to get used to it. However, it can cause a stereotype to happen in the culture. One culture might
think that all people are same in that culture. For instance, when Arabs are speaking, they like to stay
close to another person. This will make another believes that all Arabs act like that. It is much more
difficult if the stereotypes happen in the intercultural communication. This level has a high
possibility for some people to fail at this level. The next level is to pose questions to challenge the
stereotypes. They can solve the stereotypes problems by asking specific questions about other
cultures. The questions need to relate to attitudes because they can increase their knowledge about
other cultures. For example, they can ask how the relationship can be settled. The fourth level of
intercultural communication competence learning is analyzing communication episodes. After they
understand more about other cultures, they are able to analyze the way to behave and communicate

Communication with a track in intercultural communication and diversity is a field within social
sciences. Communication majors explore why people interact the way they do, and how different
theories impact their actions. The purpose as stated by T. Smith, A. Smith, and Hamby (2014) is,
"...include providing information, making an argument, persuading people to agree or to act in a
certain way, soliciting funds, or explaining behaviors, treatments, or possible outcomes" (p. 298).
The emphasis in intercultural communication provides more opportunity for explaining behaviors,
providing information, and making an argument. The Missouri State website states, "To help you
better navigate diverse workplaces and populations...improves your understanding of communication
similarities and differences among diverse groups and develops practical applications for applying
our communication skills in those settings" (2017). Intercultural diversity is a field of study that
adequately applies to everyday life in America. Diversity is not always a topic that people
understand, and therefore can cause problems or situations unknowingly, this field is intended to
help teach and stop those incidents.
