Parks, one of the leaders of the local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People [NAACP] refused to give up her seat to a white person on a segregated city bus in
Montgomery, Alabama, despite being reprimanded by the driver (Schulke 166). Montgomery,
Alabama was known for its terrible treatment of blacks. The buses in particular had been a source
of tension between the city and black citizens for many years (Schulke, 167). As a result of refusing
to give up her seat, Rosa Parks was arrested. Rosa Parks' popularity among the black community,
proved to be the spark that ignited the non–violent Civil Rights Movement (Norrell 2).
For more than a year, the African–American community in Montgomery successfully boycotted the
city bus company, Montgomery City Bus Lines, which resulted in the loss of much needed revenue
to support the city expenses. The Bus Boycott was the impetus for many whites to act violently
towards African Americans in Montgomery. Being an avid member of the NAACP, King became

In the fifties, segregation existed in every state, but it was strongest in the South where Public
Schools, transportation, hotels, and restaurants were all segregated. King convinced thousands of
African Americans in Montgomery, Alabama to refuse to ride the city buses because they were

the segregated buses. Eventually, the loss of revenue and a decision by the Supreme Court forced

His elementary teacher in school said he was "destined to be a gardener." Robinson never cared
what people that didn't have any hope for him and tried to make him feel inferior would say to
him which made him strong. (Early Life) Jackie believed that God had plans for him that were
beyond what anyone would have thought. In 1942 more than ten years before the famous Rosa
Parks incident happened, Jackie was involved in a similar conflict. He was told by an officer to
leave his seat on the white section of the bus and move to the back of the bus but Jackie refused.
The scene quickly escalated but Jackie stood still and refused to answer to the officer. This

applicable? Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the last degree resign his conscience to the
legislator? Why has every man a conscience, then? I think that we should be men first, and subjects

Thoreau is asking why we must follow and why one must never question the laws set by the
majority of people who run the government. Are we not individuals with a mind and conscience to
know right from wrong? Thoreau believes one should be their own individual, and not let
government control them. Both Thoreau, and Dr. King Jr. agree the law's set by government are
unjust and many times have a double standard for certain classes of citizen's. Thoreau also states,
"That government is best which governs not at all; and when men are prepared for it, that will be
the kind of government which they will have" (322). Thoreau believes the best government is one
that does not oppose unjust laws and lets it people live and think for themselves. This government

The second form that Dr. King talks about is hatred and violence. This is another method that he
disagrees with. King explains how violence only creates temporary results and creates more
complicated problems in the future. As a minister and deep believer in peace, King refused to
accept this way. He also believed that this form will only bring injustice to future generations. He
explained how violence today will bring chaos tomorrow. An excellent statement made by Dr. King

continue his educational studies, Martin decided to follow some spiritual educating. Martin Luther
