Reflection In Sociology
After taking a Sociology class this semester, I learned a lot of about the different topics and
concepts in this course and how they are related to our society, which has changed my perspective
as well as how I view and see the meaning of my surroundings. I would also think about what would
be going on inside a specific person's mind and how he or she was feeling. After learning about
different concepts in Sociology and watching the videos presented in class, it became easier to just
stop and think about a person, wonder who that person was, and be curious about that person's life

It is crazy to hear that the top richest people in this world have the same wealth as the poorest 3
billion people in this world. Even though rich countries are giving aid to poor countries, the huge
gap difference between their wealth is due to large corporations form rich countries taking more
money from poor countries, and this really explains a lot why poor country never have the chance to
actually thrive. The thought that poor people should be able to come up from where they came
from, which is a thought in many people's minds, especially those who have money, isn't all that
simple.
The activity we had to do for homework with the Sorting People stood out to me as well and
made me realize that classifying and judging people based on how they look and guess what their
races and ethnicities are solely by appearance, is not the right way to categorize people. I learned
that the majority of my guesses were wrong, and after reading about the people's mini bios, I then
realized that people's races and ethnicities are not determined by their physical looks. Appearance
doesn't always tell you about someone's ancestry or self–identities of themselves. "Race" cannot tell
where someone came from, what they are good at, or even how their personalities and behaviors are
like.

and don't know what is going on because they don't have the ability to look at themselves through

Functionalism
This theory argues that for a strong society to exist, social stability is important. Social stability and
adequate socialization are important in social stability. The social institutions of a society perform
the required functions that allow social stability. It is better to have a slow social change than a

Conflict theory
This theory argues that factors such as gender, race, social class and many others characterize
society through pervasive inequality. So as to reduce social inequality, there is a need for extensive

Symbolic Interactionism
This theory argues that, as people interact, they create their own roles, they don't just automatically

from my father's first marriage), he had to take a different position at his work. Although he was

could get the raise. He didn't really have a choice in the matter and because of this new change, I

my brother would call my grandmother. For three years my dad worked that job and every night
he would stay up after he got home to see us. He would make my sister and I breakfast and make

Sociologists use one or more theoretical perspective approaches to make different assumptions about
society three of the most common theoretical perspectives is the conflict, functionalist, and
interactionist. Each one of these three major sociological perspectives have similarities and
differences among each other.
The functionalist perspective believes that society is much like that of a biological organism that is
unified and interdependent. Heber Spencer developed farther with the idea of functionalism by

College help teach people so they can gain desired qualifications which will allow them to go out
and work in society. Without people being taught professions society would break down because

Another classic view is Interactionism. We can liken Interactionism to a play; everyone must play

The first step in sociological research is to create a hypothesis, and then to operationalize an idea
by transforming the subject into something that can be measured. This research can be then
carried out in two ways: either quantitative or qualitative. In both of these fields, there are multiple
methods of how to go about research. Sociological research is important in understanding public
attitudes and helping to enact new policies. It is a way to understand society, and make more
informed decisions about the ideas people discuss. For example, every day a vast amount of
people choose to take their life away for multiple reasons. One aspect of social life that I would like
to go more in detail in, is why people attempt to or actually commit suicide. By understanding the
leading causes for suicide, society can help prevent or at least understand what someone else is going
through without places a negative stigma on their situation.

If Sociology is the systematic study of human society, then sociological imagination is what we
perceive or think about how people work and or think in a more personal and bias matter. C.W.
Mills believes that merging two different theories of social reality of the "individual" and
"society". Mills challenges readers and learners by arguing many basic terms and definitions from
what "we" believe are right. Chapters one and two talks about how society portrays what we know
rather then the facts. Our bias opinions and beliefs often go against what science has proven.
Chapter one explains more about the ability to use sociological perspective, build understanding to
