Good Stuff Happens in 1:1 Meetings: Why you need them and how to do them well
All You Need to Correct An Underbite Through Orthognathic Surgery?
1. If your jaws do not line up correctly, speaking and eating become
challenging and even affect your bite. An orthognathic surgery, or a jaw
surgery, is a medical procedure that helps align a patient’s lower jaw
and upper jaw. The surgery is not a single event. Instead, it is a
continuous process that includes orthodontic treatment to help
prepare one’s teeth for jaw surgery, surgery, and post-surgery
recovery. Therefore, a typical process can last anywhere between two
to three years. Before opting for the procedure, research what’s
involved in an underbite correction process, and look at before and
after pictures to understand how it affects your appearance.
Orthognathic surgery for an underbite or a jaw surgery in India must
be done at a reputed medical facility. Dr. Sunil Richardson, a well-
known oral and maxillofacial surgeon can fix your underbite through
orthognathic surgery at the Richardsons Dental and Craniofacial
Hospital. To learn more about a corrective jaw surgery underbite cost

2. WHAT HAPPENS BEFORE AND AFTER AN
ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY?
Before you get into surgery, you may undergo several tests, including X-
rays and ultrasound scans of the teeth, photographs of the jaw and
teeth, and impressions of the teeth to develop a dental model.
During the surgery, a plastic splint is placed inside your mouth, which
will help you train your mouth muscles to work with your new jaw
3. position post-surgery. You must wear the splint throughout the day
except while brushing your teeth and having meals. Your face could be
swollen from the surgery, so it is recommended that you sleep with
your head raised and take medicines that help control the swelling.
After the surgery is over, you might remain hospitalized for the next
few days so that your progress can be monitored.
Medications are prescribed to keep infections at bay and help with the
pain. You must take these medicines on time. Patients are kept on a
liquid diet for the weeks that follow the procedure and are asked to use
ice packs on their faces during the first 24 hours. If you struggle to talk
or communicate, get in touch with your doctor so that they can suggest
ways to deal with the issue.
Eight months after your surgery, the doctors will remove the plastic
splint. If you have braces, you will have to wear them for anywhere
between six to nine months post-surgery. Once your braces come off,
you will be given removable retainers to maintain your teeth in their
new position. Although your doctor will inform you how long to keep
the retainers on, most people wear them for about a year.
