6. Summary: This book belongs to the “Christian Culture Monographs” Series, and is a
work of collective labour. The General Editor of this book writes in the Preface that
Hebrew Literature which is represented by the Bible, together with Chinese Literature,
Indian Literature, and Greek Literature, constitutes the four pillars of world literature.
The Bible is not only massive in terms of the number of its books, unique, profound,
multifaceted, being an inseparable part of the World Classics, but also, through the spread
of Christians and Jews, deeply and incomparably influential to the literature of all the
nations, especially the Medieval European literature and Modern literature. It is not an
exaggeration to say that, without the Bible, the history of Western literature were to be
rewritten. Almost all important poets and writers of all the countries in Europe and
America are closely related to the ideas and images in the Bible. Therefore, theoretically
and practically speaking, it is meaningful and important to investigate, in an objective,
neutral way, the influences of the Bible to the works of European and American writers
for a complete and accurate conception of the contexts and principles of the development
of world literature.
The publisher of this book writes that this book conducted a concrete and detailed study
of the relationship of the Bible to a serious of classic works of European and American
Writers according to a serious, prudent positivist spirit. Works discussed include
Augustine’s Confessions, Dante’s Divine Comedies, Shakespeare’s Dramas, Milton’s
Paradise Lost, Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, Goethe’s Faust, Charlotte Bronte’s
Jane Eyre, Oscar Wilde’s Salome, Thomas Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge, Franz
Kafka’s The Country Doctor, T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, James Joyce’s Ulysses, Leo
