3. ❖The trend of decline in the Child Sex Ratio (CSR), defined as number of girls per 1000 of boys
between 0-6 years of age, has been unabated since 1961. The decline from 945 in 1991 to 927
in 2001 and further to 918 in 2011 is alarming. The decline in the CSR is a major indicator of
women disempowerment. CSR reflects both, pre-birth discrimination manifested through
gender biased sex selection, and post birth discrimination against girls. Social construct
discriminating against girls on the one hand, easy availability, affordability and subsequent
misuse of diagnostic tools on the other hand, have been critical in increasing Sex Selective
Elimination of girls leading to low Child Sex Ratio. Since coordinated and convergent efforts
are needed to ensure survival, protection and empowerment of the girl child, Government has
announced Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative. This is being implemented through a national
campaign and focused multisectoral action in 100 selected districts low in CSR, covering all
States and UT’s. This is a joint initiative of Ministry of Women and Child Development,
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Reasons For Poor Literacy Rate

12. ❖Education of a girl child in India is in shambles. Especially in the rural
pockets of the country, which sees a huge drop out rate among girl
children. The right education to the girl children, which is the first step
towards encouraging girl empowerment.
➢Create accountability. 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' and other girl child
education initiatives will need firm accountability from the civic
administration.
➢Support an NGO initiative’s team.
➢Create dialogue with communities.
➢Honour academic success and extracurricular achievements.
➢Support an NGO’s like Save the Children.

13. Other Programs Launched by the
Government for girls
➢Sukanya Samridhi Yojana (Girl Child Prosperity Scheme):
The scheme primarily ensures equitable share to a girl child in
resources and savings of a family in which she is generally
discriminated as against a male child.
➢Sabla or Rajiv Gandhi Scheme:
For Empowerment of Adolescent Girls Skill Development Empowering
adolescent girls (Age) of 11–18 years with focus on out-of-school girls
by improvement in their nutritional and health status.
➢Priyadarshini:
Priyadarshini, initiated in April 2011, is a programme that offers
women in seven districts access to self-help groups.

14. It must be clear by now that empowering
the girl child with education necessitates
a change in India's deep-rooted mindsets
of powerful figures, family members,
teachers, and women. NGOs like Save the
Children are working closely with the
Government’s ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’
scheme, via massive awareness and
large-scale female welfare services across
districts. All this can ensure that a girl
child has access to life, education and
opportunities, instead of being just
household workers and family caretakers.
Educated girls stand up for themselves,
and their communities enhancing their
health, prosperity and ending social evils
like child marriage and girl child illiteracy.
