Emergence of ICT in India: Policies & Schemes
1. The National policy of education (NPE,1992), stressed the need for using Educational
Technology (ET) to improve access, quality and governance of education.
2. A Central government scheme has emerged out of these policies: Computer Literacy and
Studies in Schools (CLASS), 2004.
3. National Curriculum Framework (2005) and Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) also recommended
creating an environment for optimal utilization of ICT in education.
4. The National Policy on ICT at School Education(2009) promoted universal, equitable, open
and free access to state-of-the-art ICT and ICT-enabled tools and resources for all students and
teachers
5. ICT @ School Scheme- Launched in 2011: National ICT Award is given annually to school
teachers for innovative use of technology in learning.
6. National ICT Curriculum (2013) - aims at realizing the goals of the National Policy of ICT in
School Education and the National Curriculum Framework.
The UNESCO ICT Competency Framework for Teachers
UNESCO’s Framework emphasizes teachers
need to be able to help the students become
collaborative, problem-solving, and
creative learners by using ICT so they will be
effective citizens and members of the
workforce. The Framework, therefore,
addresses all aspects of a teacher’s work:
 Aimed at helping countries to develop comprehensive national teacher ICT competency policies
and standards
Need for ICT in teacher
education
• The face of a classroom is changing,
and education is now more child-
centric
• Is an effective tool for information
acquisition
• ICT acts as the gateway to the world
of information and helps teachers to
be updated
• Creates awareness of innovative
trends in instructional
methodologies, evaluation
mechanisms etc. for professional
development.
Strategies of implementing ICT in Teacher Education
• Providing adequate infrastructure and
technical support.
• Applying ICT in all subjects.
• By using application software, using
multimedia, Internet e-mail, communities,
and understanding system software.
Role of ICT in Teacher Education
1. Helps teachers in both pre-service and in-service teachers’ training.
2. Helps them in preparing their teaching and provides feedback.
3. Equips them with the effective use of ICT software and hardware
for the teaching-learning process.
4. Improve Teaching skills, helps in innovative Teaching.
5. Improves Professional Development and Educational management
as well as enhances Active Learning of teacher Trainees.
Challenges in the implementation of ICT in teacher
education programs
Poor infrastructural support in
Teacher Education Institutions
Lack of appropriate hardware
and software
Connectivity issues
Lack of confidence among
teacher trainees
Challenges
CONCLUSION
In the modern scenario of Science and Technology, Teacher Education evolved by
means of ICTs. Different ICTs are now set to become instrumental to help expand
access to teacher education, strengthen the relevance of teacher education to the
increasingly digital workplace and raise teacher educational quality, helping make
teaching and learning into an engaging, active process connected to real life.
Teacher training in the application of ICTs in education has a long way to go and
requires identification of the factors that can help improve the competencies that
current and future teachers must acquire in order to implement digital literacy in our
schools
