4. What is ICT?
According to, the Department of Information Technology, GOI, (ICT), refers to
forms of technology that are used to

5. Emergence of ICT in India: Policies & Schemes
1. The National policy of education (NPE,1992), stressed the need for using Educational
Technology (ET) to improve access, quality and governance of education.
2. A Central government scheme has emerged out of these policies: Computer Literacy and
Studies in Schools (CLASS), 2004.
3. National Curriculum Framework (2005) and Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) also recommended
creating an environment for optimal utilization of ICT in education.
4. The National Policy on ICT at School Education(2009) promoted universal, equitable, open
and free access to state-of-the-art ICT and ICT-enabled tools and resources for all students and
teachers
5. ICT @ School Scheme- Launched in 2011: National ICT Award is given annually to school
teachers for innovative use of technology in learning.
6. National ICT Curriculum (2013) - aims at realizing the goals of the National Policy of ICT in
School Education and the National Curriculum Framework.
6. The UNESCO ICT Competency Framework for Teachers
UNESCO’s Framework emphasizes teachers
need to be able to help the students become
collaborative, problem-solving, and
creative learners by using ICT so they will be
effective citizens and members of the
workforce. The Framework, therefore,
addresses all aspects of a teacher’s work:

and understanding system software.
9. Role of ICT in Teacher Education
1. Helps teachers in both pre-service and in-service teachers’ training.

11. CONCLUSION
In the modern scenario of Science and Technology, Teacher Education evolved by
means of ICTs. Different ICTs are now set to become instrumental to help expand
access to teacher education, strengthen the relevance of teacher education to the
increasingly digital workplace and raise teacher educational quality, helping make
teaching and learning into an engaging, active process connected to real life.
Teacher training in the application of ICTs in education has a long way to go and
requires identification of the factors that can help improve the competencies that
current and future teachers must acquire in order to implement digital literacy in our
schools
