Many supporters of Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris have strongly argued
that they were all subject to sexist attacks by both political foes and the media (others
disagree). After reading the online Friedan article about the position of women in the 1950s,

reading the Friedan article about the position of women in the 1950s, I can completely
understand why supporters of women in politics would experience sexist attacks. In the
article, it talks about how the goal in life for women in that time period was to be a
housewife. If a woman’s goal in life was to be a scientist, doctor, or any pursuit in the job
field, she would be seen as “un-feminine”. Fast forward 50 years: women are running for
governor, Vice President, and President of the United States. While I see these women as
capable, strong, and progressive, others may not like that women are taking charge and
becoming important political leaders. Some people are stuck in 1950s, where all women
were good for was cooking, cleaning, and taking care of children, so seeing women in high
up positions could be infuriating for extremely conservative people. For me, this article
further proved how strong and persevering a women in power is. Not only did Sarah Palin,
Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris have to face the struggles of gaining political popularity
and working their way up to getting noticed by people, but they also had to face struggles of
being a woman in power and fighting for a spot against male opponents.
