What were some issues that faced society in your parents' generation? grandparents generation? The nation of Israel?
Sometimes we can look at the past to help us answer today's issues.
History:
``What's Going On'' is a 1971 classic performed by Marvin Gaye. ``What's Going On'' was a timely record that moved a generation at a time when there was much commotion throughout not just the United States but also the entire world. The song touched upon the deep-rooted political and social problems that were crippling mankind's progress.
Gaye got caught up in political and social matters. He took a profound interest in his brother Frankie's stories upon returning home from the Vietnam War. Marvin was disturbed by inner city culture being overridden by drugs and rising black on black crime. And he was also bothered by the assassinations of leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy. With all of this weighing on his mind, and a troubled marriage as well, Marvin Gaye did not want to sing any more love songs. In fact, he didn't want to sing at all. He even tried out for football's Detroit Lions during his sabbatical from music.
Shortly before the terrorist attacks on the US in 2001, a group of artists including Bono, Michael Stipe, Jennifer Lopez and Christina Aguilera recorded this to benefit AIDS research in Africa. After the terrorism, they decided to give half the proceeds to victims of the attacks and the other half to AIDS charities. The song was scheduled for release on World AIDS Day, December 1, but was pushed up to September 21 due to the tragedy.
After the terrorist attacks on the US, MTV aired a version of this featuring footage of the recording session mixed with images from the attacks
The nation of Israel has had times of peace and times of conquering. From slaves in Egypt, to freedom, to the kingdom being divided (Judah and Israel), to the fall of the kingdom in 721BCE, to the exile of
Jerusalem in 587 BCE, a revolt against the Greeks in 166BCE, Romans conquer the Holy Land in 63 BCE, Rome destroys the Temple in 70 AD, Halocaust, and continual threats against their religion, this song speaks to the nation of Israel and all the Children of the New Covenant.
Song
You Tube
The images, stories, and metaphors that weave through the Old and New Testaments have meaning throughout history and still have meaning today. The Covenants of Old are part of our faith. The New covenant that Jesus gave us works through us today.
We Are God's People
Proclaim the Word: John 1:1-5
Leader: Holy God, help us better to understand the old covenants of our Jewish ancestors and the new covenant for all peoples with Jesus.
All: Lord, guide us on our journey.
Side One: May we work together to renew the face of the earth, to care for all of its creatures, and to see the beauty in all creation as we are entrusted to be good stewards.
Side Two: May we be reminded of our Baptisms, and like Noah stand up for righteousness. Let us be refreshed through God's loving grace and mercy that is always given to us when we fail.
Side One: May we learn to trust in God's promises as Abraham and consecrate our lives to totally to God so that God may use us to build his Kingdom.
Side Two: May we be open to letting God work through us as Moses did, and live the Ten Commandments not just written on stone, but on our hearts as well.
Side One: May we find great joy in God's love as David did, and share in his hope for the Messiah, who will come again.
Side Two: May we read the Bible with your help and the help of the Church, and better understand it and make it part of our lives.
All: Lord, guide us on our journey.
Let us hold hands and pray together to our God in the words our Lord Jesus gave to us:
All: Our Father, who art in heaven......
Send forth: Loving God, we pray that you will guide us on our journey and hold us in the palm of your hand. Help us to find you in the wisdom of the ages, in the stories of Your Son, in the goodness of the People of God, and in the world that you have entrusted to our care. Help us to hear our own call and to be in relationship with you like the Israelites have always been. You are our God and we are your people. We hold the covenants of Old and New. Help us keep keep and live these covenants. We ask this prayer in Jesus' name. Amen.
