Banmaw diocese in northern Myanmar is showing “solidarity” with Kachin refugees who fled rebel clashes with government forces by responding to their most urgent needs. The church’s social arm, Karuna, has collected information and has responded to those most in need by providing clothing and food, according to Bishop Raymond Sumlut Gam of Banmaw. “Our first priority is to use our limited resources to help the needy and that is what we are doing,” Bishop Raymond said today. “At present, we are trying to help in providing to their specific needs,” he added. Fighting which broke out between government troops and the rebel Kachin Independence Army on June 9 saw thousands flee their villages and head across the Myanmar-China border or to larger towns further away from the clashes.

8. Fighting has reportedly eased in the past few days, which has persuaded a few to return to their villages. But many are not yet willing to take the risk and return, according to church sources.

9. Meanwhile three parish priests in the diocese have been offering refugees spiritual support.

10. “We’re giving moral support by reaching out to them and helping families,” said Father Luke Kha Li, a priest from Zaubung parish.

11. Last Sunday, the Church organized a day of adoration events and urged parishioners to pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament for “peace”, on the feast of Corpus Christi, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
