This is a presentation I gave at a conference of the Body-Mind Centering Association in 2015. In the document I share my insights about the link I discovered between creative-therapeutical theories about the process, appreciative inquiry and theory U. This was found during facilitating the creation process of a performance about people and their secrets.

Theoretical frameworks
Client-centered therapy, creative-therapeutical theories about the
process and appreciative inquiry
17. 1. Client-centered therapy
• Humanistic psychology.
• Rogers (1961): “Humans have one basic motive, that
is the tendency to self-actualize – i.e. to fulfill one’s
potential and achieve the highest level of ‘human-
beingness’ we can.
• Therapeutical attitudes (Lietaer, 2003):
– Empathy.
– Unconditional positivity: total acceptance of human being
through dedication, confirmation and warmth.
– Genuineness: congruence & transparancy.
19. 2. Creative-therapeutical theories about
the process (H. Smeijsters, 2006)
• Creative-processtheory: shape and content (Smitskamp, 1993).
• Self-actualization process (Maslow & Rogers):
– The healthy side.
– Playing & exploring, creativity as prevention of diseases.
– In search for the true self.
• Art analogous approach (Wallas, 1921):
– The focus is on the creating process in the medium.
– Experiencing and being creative with art can be seen as to gain true
knowledge about yourself (Gadamer).
• Analogues process model:
– Emphasizes the similarity between how one thinks, feels and act
outside and inside the therapy.
20. “The change in personality resulting from personal
growth is a creative product, growing out of the
uniqueness of the individual on the one hand and the
materials, events, people or circumstances of his life
on the other.”
(Rogers, 1961)
22. 3. Appreciative Inquiry (D. Cooperrider & R. Fry)
• Appreciative Inquiry is a collaborative, strength-based approach to
both personal and organizational development.
• Appreciative Inquiry is about the coevolutionary search for the best
in people, their organizations, and the relevant world around them.
• The basic tenet of AI: an organization will grow in whichever
direction that people in the organization focus their attention.
• Starting point: identifying strenghts and building on those strenghts
through questions that encourage positive thinking.
• Approach inspired by social constructionism and enriched by
positive psychology (Bushe, 2012; Cooperrider, Whitney & Stavros,
2005).

37. What is strong in my opinion?
• Working towards a product.
-> gives focus to the creative process.
• Performance is an actual product of the group.
-> reflects their own themes.
• Creating trust and openness.
-> essential for the group process.
• Sufficient time to experiment, independently of
the final product.
• Supervision as support during the whole process.
38. - What is a good framework for creative processes I can offer?
• Boundaries (e.g. timing, actions).
• Regarding the performance itself (light, sound, financial
resources, …).
- How essential is an introduction workshop?
- How to create support during the whole process?
- How to create real added value in 2nd phase?
- How give attention to each creative individual process in a creative
group process?
- How would it be:
• To integrate autentic movement in a performance project?
• To have a creative process that’s not focused on 1 theme?
Remaining questions.

What is the added value of creative processes to you?
How does this story links to the field of BMC?
How do you perceive the relationship
between process & product?
What is the function of an audience?
