1. The mission of the Star Foundation is to provide tutoring for at-risk youths
at grade level K-12 who live in Durham, North Carolina or in the Research
Triangle Park. Our goal is to assist them through a structured tutoring program,
so that they can excel at or above their grade level in academics, lifeskills,
and computer skills.
The need for the project is multifaceted. Star Foundation seeks to provide
an array of supportive services via an access to and by promoting the
effective use of charitable and educational avenues so that all youth with
outstanding talents can have a chance to succeed, regardless of their ethnic,
financial or personal circumstances.
There are three distinct demographic groups who need access to these services for separate, yet common
reasons. The groups include, but are not limited to, low-income middle school-aged youth of African
American, Hispanic/Latino and white heritage.
Star Foundation goal is to provide for at-risk youths a positive experience when interacting with teachers
and their peers in academics, social diversity and culture enrichment activities. The youths will be from
various socio-economics backgrounds. Background screening will be taken to ensure that only
participants who have not committed any felonies for which they have be convicted or can be tried as
adults can participate. This applicant agency will always be cognizant of the safety of the staff, other
participants and volunteers.
Applications for enrollment will be completed on each participant. The application will indicate the
current grade level, subjects in which the participant is weak, and the goals or careers the participant is
interested in pursuing. These goals and career choices will be prioritized so that the staff can assist the
participant with his/her interests.
A state-of-the-art computer lab will assist Star Foundation with providing the latest technology available
to our students in this very competitive education, and job environment. Also, this assistance will enable
our teachers, mentors, and volunteers to provide only the most current, and state approved curriculum.
All students will be accessed on their initial math, science, and reading ability to ensure that they are at or
above grade level. From these data a client profile will be established with the collaboration of the
parents to assist the child in progressing to the next grade level.
