Skateboarding
60 Year Evolution
1940s
Children in France rode
what is considered to be the
ancestor of the skateboard.
1950s
Surfers faced with bad
surfing conditions, attach
metal rollerskate wheels
to wooden planks and
begin “Street Surfing”.
1960s
Some small refinements
in the shape of the board
are made. Metal wheels
replace clay, providing
a smoother ride.
1970s
Plastic boards hit the scene
and the kicktail is intoduced.
Polyurethane wheels replace
the clay ones. Alan Gelfand
performs the first Ollie.
1980s
Wider boards with short
noses become popular. Side
rails and plates are added
for grinding rails and coping.
Bigger softer polyurethane
wheels are prefered.
1990s- Current
Board decreases width
by 2 inches, kicktails are
added to front and back
of the board. Smaller
wheels give faster
rotations in flip tricks.
Main Tricks
Level out the board by sliding
the front foot towards the
nose of the board.
Land solidly on the ground
on all four wheels,
to land the Ollie.
Ollie
Push down on the conclave
with the backfoot, then jump
into the air after the tail
hits the ground.
50-50 Grind
Aproach the rail or ledge
and pop an Ollie.
50-50 Grind
Land on the rail or ledge
with both trucks, and balance
your body as you slide
across the surface.
Pop an Ollie near the end
to dismount the rail or
ledge, and land the grind.
Rodney Mullen
Many consider Rodney
to be the best skateboarder
the world has ever seen.
He invented over 30 tricks
to include Kickflip,
Flatground Ollie, Heelflip,
and the Impossible.
Eric Koston
Influential to the evolution
and growth of skateboarding
in the 90′s. Eric did for street
skating, what Tony Hawk did
for Vert skating.
Mark “Gonz” Gonzalez
Street skating pioneer.
First to grind a rail, first
to skate switch.
1993 in Embarcadero,
San Fransisco, Mark is
the first man to Ollie a
major gap, it is now known
as Gonz Gap.
Stacy Peralta
The highest ranked
skateboarder by the age
of 19. Member of the Zephyr
Competition Team, known
as the Z-Boys. Formed
Bones Brigade and began
filming and distributing
videos, which influenced
many young boys and girls.
Jay Adams
The youngest member of
the Z-Boys at age 13.
Known for his explosive
energy and surf-like
movements, Jay is one
of the first skaters to be
photographed catching
air over the edge of
a swimming pool.
Tony Hawk
Pro at 14 years old, Tony
is the most influential
inventor of modern day
skateboarding. He is the
first person to do a 900 flip.
The Founding Fathers
Competitions
Street
The skater is judged on their
range of skills and the
degree of difficulty.
Other areas of interest
are the speed, height and
originality of the trick, as
well as the execution of
a combination of moves.
Each competetor performs
tricks using stairs, hand rails,
curbs, benches, and walls.
Park
The course is made up of
ramps, bowls and dishes,
which the skater uses to
build speed, climb the
verticle walls and perform
mid air tricks. They are
judged on speed, originality
and difficulty of their tricks
as well as how they hold
the board, and how long
they can stay off the ground.
