London is the biggest city in
Britain.
More than 8 million people
live there.
London stands on the river
Thames.
London consists of four
parts:
the City, Westminster,
the East End and
the West End.
London is a city of history,
museums and monuments.

2. The Houses of Parliament
The Houses of Parliament
on the river Thames are
very old.
There was a royal palace
there, and now it is the seat
of the British Parliament.
The Clock Tower of the
Houses of Parliament is
famous for its big hour bell,
known as Big Ben.

3. Big Ben
Big Ben is a symbol of
England.
Big Ben is the large clock and
a very big bell in the Clock
Tower of the Houses of
Parliament.
The bell weighs about 14 tons.
They got their names after
Sir Benjamin Hall.
He was a tall man, whose
nickname was Big Ben.

4. Trafalgar Square
Trafalgar Square is in the
centre of London.
All tourists meet here.
Trafalgar Square is famous
for its Nelson’s Column, a
beautiful monument to
Admiral Nelson in the centre
of the square.
He defeated the French at
the Battle of Trafalgar in
1805.

5. Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge is a bascule
bridge* over the River
Thames. It is a symbol of
London.

6. Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey is a
royal church.
It is situated opposite the
Houses of Parliament.
The church is more than 900
years old.
There was the coronation of
Queen Elizabeth II in
Westminster Abbey.
There are tombs of many
kings, queens and other
famous people here.
