ENG 295 Wk 4 - Fiction
Domestic fiction is that group of work that is centered on real life. Children read
fictional stories but can easily picture themselves in that scene or performing those
tasks. These works of domestic fiction help children develop emotional maturity and a
sense of self-worth starting with identifying with their parents and family.
Review 2 fiction stories from this week's assigned or optional readings. You may
choose any two from this week.
Write a 550- to 700-word paper where you compare the two stories you chose in how
they teach emotional maturity and instill a sense of imagination. What conclusions
can you draw about the two types of fiction you chose? What is their importance to
the culture of children?
FOR BOTH OPTIONS - Use stories, and at least 2 course reserve readings
(University Library Readings) and the textbook at least once to complete this and
every assignment in this course.
OR
Write a 550 to 700-word paper discussing the impact the Harry Potter series had on
children's literature and publishing and how it can instill a sense of
imagination. Compare Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to another reading from
this week.
FOR BOTH OPTIONS - Use stories, and at least 2 course reserve readings
(University Library Readings) and the textbook at least once to complete this and
every assignment in this course. NOTE: If you pick the Harry Potter Option, use the
following articles as your source material:

ENG 295 CL Wk 5 - Nonfictions and Issues
In Week 5, you will more deeply examine the value of children's literature as a tool
of moral and ethical development, as well as the opportunity to study issues in
children's literature. There are several substantial issues in children's literature
that greatly affect the teaching and exposure of children's literature. It is important
to understand these issues when looking at the value of teaching the genre of
children's literature.
Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper that includes the following:
A description of the value of teaching children's literature as a tool of moral and
ethical development in children, using examples from the course readings.
Choose 2-3 topics below to discuss the moral and ethical development in children
and how CL can impact the readers:
 Imagination
 Domestic Fiction
 Science Fiction
 Nonfiction
 The Harry Potter Effect on CL
 Censorship (by parents, schools, libraries, religious group, political
groups...)
 Violence
 Sex
 Sexual Orientation
 Race
 Dual Audience (children and adults) and their influences
Use at least two examples from weeks 1-4 required stories/poems, at least
two references from Course Reserves (University Library Readings) from
Week 5. Also, use at least one quote from the textbook as well.
Note: if you choose censorship, select a reading that is often censored and
determine why it is censored and whether or not you agree with that censorship.
The discussion should be about the literature and its benefits or defects, not about
personal opinion and social norms.
Format your assignment according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines.
Note: Students who are enrolled in the BA in English program may be required to
use MLA formatting.
