En9g-iva-22: Use the
active and passive voice
correctly.
At the end of the class, the students should be able to:
• determine the active and passive voice in the given
sentences;
• use sentences in active voice to passive voice and
vice-versa
Recall: What is the play, “A Raisin in
the Sun” all about?
Drill: Let us read the sentences on the
board.
1. Mother buys a house with
lawn.
2. Walter invests the money.
What is the subject in the sentence? Verb?
Direct object?
SUBJECT- part of a sentence names
whom or what the sentence is
about.
Verb- the action made in the
sentence.
Direct object- receives the
action of a verb. It answers the
question whom? or what? After
an action verb.
Identify which of the following is in active voice
and in passive voice.
1.Lorraine Hansberry
writes the play, “A Raisin
in the Sun”.
2.The play “A Raisin in the
Sun” is written by
Lorraine Hansberry.
Which of the given sentences is in:
active voice? Why?
passive voice? Why?
Active Voice

Active voice- a verb is in
active voice when the
subject performs the action
of the verb.
Ex. The company
makes a huge profit.
Active voice
Passive voice- when the
subject receives the action
of the verb.
Ex. A huge profit is
made by the company.
Passive voice
Note the verbs in the passive
voice consist of a form of be
and the past participle. Often
a phrase beginning with by
follows a verb in the passive
voice.
