2. INTRODUCTION:
Unix is a portable,
multitasking, multiuser, time-
sharing operating system (OS)
originally developed in 1969
by a group of employees at
AT&T Bells lab.
3. BEST THING ABOUT BELLS LAB?
• A significant thing about Bell labs is that, In Bell Labs
1. 50% of people are Producing softwares and
2. other 50% of them have direct involvement with softwares
• That’s the main problem in today's world, that we need useful
softwares of effective working, but we don’t have enough people for
writing softwares.

The first version of UNIX was created in 1969 by Kenneth
Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, system engineers at AT&T's Bell
Labs.
In 1973 they rewrote the Unix kernel in C to make operating
system "portable" to other computers systems.
The 1978 release of Version 7 included the Bourne Shell for the
first time.
UNIX released Ten editions between 1971-1989.
5. THING THAT DISTINGUISH UNIX
FROM OTHER OPERATING
SYSTEMS:
The thing which distinguish UNIX from other systems is the
degree to which those building blocks can glued together in
many different ways to get many different jobs done . the
system is very flexible
Example:
Spell checking software:
We can glue different unix programs to make such software
1. Break the sentence into words
2. Lower case
3. Arrange them in sorted order
4. Use function UNIQUE to remove duplicate words
5. Program mismatch
6. Why we use Unix?
ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASONS FOR
USING UNIX IS NETWORKING
CAPABILITY. UNIX IS IDEAL FOR SUCH
THINGS AS WORLDWIDE.
E-MAIL AND CONNECTING TO THE
INTERNET.
BECAUSE UNIX WAS DEVELOPED
DIFFERENT PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT
NEEDS IT HAS GROWN TO AN
OPERATING SYSTEM THAT IS BOTH
FLEXIBLE AND EASY TO ADAPT FOR
SPECIFIC NEEDS.
UNIX IS MORE SECURE THAN
WINDOWS.
7. Features:
• Multiuser System
• Multitask System
• Building Block Approach
• Unix Tool Kit
• Pattern matching
• Programming Facility
• User Manual
8. PROS OF UNIX
1. Memory usage
2. Less code to execute
3. Files used everywhere
4. Ideal for web hosting
5. Safe and secure
6. No anti-virus needed
7. Portable
9. CONS OF UNIX:
1. Not user friendly.
2. Understand primary features.
3. Cryptic commands.
4. Poor documentation.
5. Precision input
10. Proposed Operating
System:
We have decided to made some
improvements in unix to make it
more compatible for the users
The name of Proposed operating
system is “ENOS”
