In 1916, when both sides found the war difficult and were tired of the two year stalemate, the battle of The Somme was a desperate attempt to break
the stalemate. It was a British plan to cause a breakthrough and ultimately, end the war. During this battle the tank made its introduction, being partially
successful 1 million British soldiers were killed. Though costly, a breakthrough was achieved, and land was re–captured, British morale remained low
due to the high casualties and the tactic of attrition, sending soldiers "over the top" constantly, to wear the German defenders down. At the battle of

Declared and Real Causes For the War Imperialism was one of the major causes of the First World War and it was majorly characterized by a trend
among European powers to have colonies across the globe (to cement their power in world politics). This view is especially supported by the fact that
many European powers had bitterly contested a number of Asian and African territories as part of their colonies. The scramble for colonies and
increased imperialism among European countries was especially exacerbated by the increased industrialization trend across Europe which consequently
led to the need for raw materials to power Europe's industries (Kelly 3). The raw materials were found in the colonies. The scramble for colonies
therefore increased the level of animosity among existing European powers, thereby fueling the First World War. Militarism is also another known
cause for the Second World War because in the early years of the 20th century, there was an ongoing arms race among various European power houses
(Strachan 54). Noticeably, Germany had tremendously increased its military buildup while in Russia; military spending had become a matter of public
policy (Kelly 4). The countries involved in the arms race were therefore prepared for war and therefore, the provocation of war between

Why did the First World War break out in 1914?
In this essay I will be outlining the key points in why the First World War broke out in 19 14. Many people tend to say "Because Archduke
Ferdinand got shot." Still others have blamed it on the increased independence and Imperialism in Hungary to Russia's growing military. If I had to
answer the question myself, the answer would be all of the above, and more. The events from June of 1914 through August of 1914 can be described
as one thing leading to another. The chain of events starts with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Some people tend to think that this
event was the one total cause of World War One, but that is not the case. The assassination is only one small trigger.
By the 1st of August 1914, Germany had declared war on Russia, as well as threatening Belgium. At this point everyone was trying to protect their
country and the countries of their alliances'. So we can see that another trigger to the war was threat, threat that their land would be taken, and that their
military was not large enough. So again there was this thirst for land and a need to beat others, this formation of alliances is none other than another
trigger to the First World War.
One other major problem which triggered the events of world war one was the fight for imperial power. TheBritish Empire was huge by 1900; Britain
owned a quarter of the world. Huge amounts of money were made from these colonies and Britain had a powerful military presence in all parts of
the world. The Empire was seen as the status symbol of a country that was the most powerful in the world. Countries that were not part of the British
Empire such as Germany and Austria were almost jealous of its power and wanted more land for their country. This is how the fight for imperial
power began. Countries started to invade others and build more resources and focus on the numbers of their armies and navies. Making sure theirs

The long term factor causing World War I is nationalism of each country. Each country's citizens have a strong sense of patriotism, making it easier
to create and have large armies in times of war. The old age's ideas of war being honorable and to show manhood would eventually lead to large
amounts of men to go to war when it broke out. This factor is crucial for a large scale war to break out across the globe. Many believed that war
would be over before they could join and this helped sustain the large scale war. Another long term factor of nationalism is that nationalism brings
competition, to back off or show restraint makes a country look weak, and so countries are more eager to declare or go to the brink of war. It is
even considered honorable go to the brink of war to maintain national interest and these ideas of nationalism eventually lead to World War I breaking
out. Even the people of their countries supported war because of nationalism. As always nationalism is the fuel for the fire, but the short term spark is
misinformation about the war. The belief that war would be quick and be done before Christmas would lead to large support for going to war. The
governments even pushed nationalism propaganda to drum up support and conscriptions into the war. The last short term factor that causes war is that
each country's government believed that war would spark nationalism and prevent revolts and
