5. RAW MATERIALS : Needle Coke (Approximately 85 – 90% in content).
The highly anisotropic needle coke, due to its structure is indispensable for the manufacture of
high-performance electrodes used in Electric Arc Furnace & Laddle Refinery Furnace.
BINDERS : (Approximately 20 – 25% in content).
Binding agents are used to agglomerate the solid particles to each other.
MIXING & EXTRUSION :
The milled coke is mixed with coal tar pitch and some additives to form a uniform paste. Where
the mixture is extruded to form an electrode of the desired diameter & length.
BAKING :
Here the extrude rods are placed in cylindrical stainless steel conisters to aviod the deformation
of electrode during the heating process.
Manufacturing Process
6. IMPREGNATION :
The baked electrodes are impregnated with a special pitch at 200° C to give them the higher
density, mechanical strength and electrical conductivity.
RE-BAKING :
A second baking or “re-bake” is required to carbonize the pitch impregnation and to drive off
any remaining volatiles.
GRAPHITIZATION :
The final step in graphite electrode manufacture is a conversion of backed carbon to graphite is
called graphitizing.
The electrode are packed in electrical furnace surrounded by carbon particles to form a solid
mass. An electric current is passed through the furnace raising the temperature to approximately
3000° C.
MACHINING:
The Graphite electrodes after cooling are machined to extract dimension & tolerances.
7. Graphite Electrode Overview
A graphite electrode is defined as a high level of electrical conductivity and the capability to
sustain in extremely high level of dissipated heat.
Graphite electrode can be classified as Ultra-high Power(UHP), High Power(HP), Regular
Power(RP).
By application, it’s usually defined as Electric Arc Furnace(EAF), Ladle Furnace(LF).
8. Graphite Electrode category
The graphite electrode are utilized in refine steel in Electric Arc Furnace, Ladle Refining Furnace,
as well as it can be useful in smelting processes.
In general, Graphite electrodes are also in three different consumption categories such as :
• Regular Power (RP) : 3.8 to 4.0 kg / MT
• High Power (HP) : HP 2.0-3.0 kg/ MT
• Ultra High Power (UHP) : UHP 0.8-1.0 Kg / MT
9. Major Application
Electric Arc Furnace (EAF):
Steel mills UHP usually 350mm and large.
Iron & Steel foundries HP and UHP usually 400mm and smaller.
Ladle Heating / Refining Furnace (LHF / LRF):
Steel mills UHP usually 400 and 450 mm
Steel mills HP usually 200 to 400 mm
Types of Furnace :
1. Alternating current (AC) three phase
a) Up to 700mm electrodes
b) Uses three electrodes in a delta configuration.
2. Direct current (DC) single phase
a) Usually, 600 to 800mm electrode.
b) Uses one electrode in center.
10. Testing of Electrodes
Testing of Electrodes
1. Tests performed on finished graphite electrodes.
On whole electrodes
Specific electrical resistance
Apparent density
Machining tolerances
2. On core samples from selected electrodes
Specific electrical resistance
Apparent density
Coefficient of thermal expansion
Flexural strength (4-point loading)
Ash
11. Properties of Electrodes
Bulk or Apparent Density – A higher bulk density will generally be reflected in
improved mechanical properties.
Flexural Strength – Higher flexural strength in electrodes will generally result in
lower electrode breakage frequency.
Tensile Strength – Higher tensile strength in nipples will generally result in
lower nipple breakage frequency.
Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) – Lower CTE will generally give
better resistance to thermal shock. Also, CTE compatibility between the graphite
electrode and connecting nipple is important for satisfactory performance of the
electrode joint.
Specific Electrical Resistance (SER or ER) – Low specific resistance of
graphite electrodes allows maximum current carrying capability without
overheating of the electrode column.
12. Choosing right Electrode
So many choices – how do we determine the right one?
Current density
Secondary amperes/πr2 = current density
Usually expressed in amps/cm2 or amps/in2
Application – EAF, LF, other
Time factor – tap-to-tap, on power
Heat size, esp. in ladle
Other possible factors
Airflow characteristics
Slag practices
Chemistry of heat
13. Causes for Breakage
Poor scrap quality
Large pieces cause cave-ins
Non-conductors are in the way of arcing.
Improper regulator operation. Airflow characteristics
Slow reaction to short circuit-can’t move away from cave-in.
Improper addition – look for gaps or hot joint, may be unwinding.
Debris or damage from storage or lift plug may contribute.
Low strength or flaw in nipple – common with non – needle coke electrodes
Operator error – furnace lid in way, dropped when slipping, etc.
Socket and nipple to be dust free
Tight fitting
Torque for different sizes. N/mm2
14. Normal Diameter and length of Electrode.

Our Specification and Capacity
18. Why are graphite electrodes used?
Graphite Electrode/rods are used as in electrolysis because graphite’s structure enables it to be an excellent conductor. The high number of
delocalized electrons allows electricity to pass through graphite rapidly.
Is graphite electrode inert?
Graphite and platinum are examples of inert electrodes. Examples of reactive electrodes are copper, silver and gold.
What is the application of UHP Graphite Electrode?
UHP graphite electrodes are used to recycle steel in the arc furnace industry. Its main ingredient is high-value needle coke, made from petroleum or
coal tar. To meet the requirements of higher work efficiency and lower total cost, large capacity ultra-high power arc furnace is becoming more and
more popular. As a result, UHP graphite electrodes with diameters of more than 450 mm will dominate the market.
What are the main properties of graphite electrodes?
Different grades, different performance.
Mainly depends on the power, is the ordinary RP, high HP, or ultra-high.
The UHP. Specifically, it will involve density, ash content, resistivity, and bending resistance,
Strength, modulus of elasticity, etc.
What is Regular power graphite electrode?
Regular power graphite electrode is produced by ordinary grade petroleum coke, with low graphitization temperature, high resistivity, large linear
expansion coefficient and poor thermal shock resistance, so the allowable current density is low.
