Circumstances for software development projects have changed tremendously during the past years. On the one hand, software is expected to solve increasingly complex problems within an ever growing number of domains. On the other hand, the advent of practices like continuous deployment allow for incredibly short release and feedback cycles. How do we deal with these challenges from a software customer's or product owner's point of view when traditional methods of requirements analysis - possibly even the traditional definition of the term "requirement" itself - fall short? In this session, I want to show how Impact Mapping, a technique developed by Gojko Adzic, can help us establish a view on requirements that is better suited to today's problems. By means of a concrete example I'll explain how to use this method and give some helpful advice for future practitioners.

Die Aufgaben der IT werden zunehmend durch das Bedürfnis von Unternehmen geprägt, ihren OODA-Loop (observe, orient, decide and act) zu verkürzen. Konzepte wie Lean Startup und Continuous Delivery gewinnen an Bedeutung. Der herkömmliche, auf Vollständigkeit und Korrektheit abzielende Begriff der "Anforderung" wirkt vor diesem Hintergrund zunehmen schwerfällig. Ein Werkzeug, das sich dieses Problems annimmt, ist das von Gojko Adzic entwickelte Impact Mapping. Wie dieses Verfahren funktioniert und worauf es in der Praxis ankommt, möchte ich Ihnen in diesem Vortrag anhand eines konkreten Beispiels zeigen.

Mit Continuous Delivery steht uns ein mächtiges Werkzeug zur Verfügung. Lange Release-Zyklen gehören der Vergangenheit an, das neue Feature ist nur noch einen Commit entfernt. Umso mehr rückt die Frage in den Vordergrund, wie wir dieses Werkzeug gewinnbringend einsetzen können. Eine entscheidende Voraussetzung dafür ist, die Anforderungs-Pipeline ohne monatelange Planungsphasen sinnvoll zu füllen. Mit Impact Mapping möchte ich eine Methode vorstellen, die uns dabei helfen kann, die durch Continuous Delivery verkürzten Feedbackschleifen dafür zu nutzen, unsere Anforderungen konsequent und kontinuierlich an Projekt- und Geschäftszielen auszurichten.

Impact Mapping ist ein von Gojko Adzic formuliertes Verfahren zur zielgerichteten Erhebung und Beschreibung von Anforderungen. Es zielt nicht auf die Formulierung einer lückenlosen Spezifikation, sondern konzentriert sich darauf, plausible Experimente zur Erreichung eines Geschäftsziels mittels Software zu identifizieren. Anhand eines konkreten Beispiels zeige ich in dieser Präsentation, wie Impact Mapping abläuft, worauf man bei der Durchführung achten sollte und wie sich das Verfahren im Rahmen agiler Softwareentwicklung verwenden lässt.
