How to disable Toyota seat belt alarm with ELM327 scanner
The owners manual indicates that the seat belt alarm is possible to be normally turned
off but gives no instruction on how to do so. Usually we have to pay the dealer to do it
for you. But by following the tutorial below, you can turn it off yourself. This is a way
of disabling the alarm this without any wiring changes. I only tried it out on my 2013
TRD off road Tacoma and can confirm it works. It may work on other year models, I
am not sure.
Step one, buy an ELM327 OBD2 code reader. Mine was about 10 bucks from
DIYOBD2.FR. The one I got is designed for XP system with Bluetooth. There are
many kinds of ELM327 scanners out there. If you buy a Bluetooth model as I do, you
can do all kinds of cool things. If you buy an ELM327 IOS system model, you can
also use this in the future with iPhone and iPad.
Step two, plug the ELM327 Bluetooth into the OBD port of your car, power it up and
get a Bluetooth laptop or computer to talk to it. Open up hyperterminal, or putty or
any basic terminal program after the Bluetooth connection is built. Change the com
port to your Bluetooth serial (mine was com40 as it told me when my Bluetooth
connected). Connection set to 9600/N/8/1.
Step three, the most important part, just plug in the commands below and your
seatbelt alarm will be permanently off. This is basically what the dealer will do if you
bring it in, although they may use some expensive, fancy tools.
Below are the commands and response along with my notes prefixed with a star sign.
