Product packaging is a growing industry that has rapidly assumed the role of “supporter” for every industry
that has a product to roll out. The same goes for food products. The plastic packaging manufacturers have
taken the lead in providing custom food packaging that cater to the chemical, physical and biological needs
of the product inside.
The first form of food packaging came around in the form of wrappers. Wrappers for candies, bread, meat,
etc. became extremely popular since their invention in the 18th
century. They were made of cellulose and
freed the buyer of having to carry foodstuff in his hands. It was an option which was safe, light, hassle-free
and kept food in edible condition for a considerable period of time. Even the cigarettes came wrapped in
one of these things during that time. Cotton material also was in popular use for foodstuff like meat and
other heavy things – it was used mostly in England.
It was not until the 19th
century that plastic wrappers came into being. Then they became widely popular.
Since then, plastic use in the industry of product packaging has only grown and groomed. Plastics have
become an indispensable material that is a necessary evil of every industry – especially the food industry. It
is important that food packaging plastics be in conformance with certain standards to prevent foodstuff
from getting contaminated or modified because of bad quality plastics going into its packaging. Health and
