2. CHESS PIECES
1. MAJOR PIECES
a. The Knight
b. The Bishop
2. MINOR PIECES
a. The Pawn
b. The rook
c. The Queen
a. The King
3. The Pawn
The pawn only attacks
or captures enemy
pieces located on
either forward
diagonal squares.
On its first move,
however, the pawn
has the option of
moving two squares
forward.
The pawn can only
move forward one
square at a time.
4. The Knight
The knight is the
only piece that
can move (jump)
over other
pieces. It lands
on an opposite
color square
diagonal to any
of the opposite
color squares
surrounding the
square where the
knight is currently
stationed.
6. The rook
The rook, moves
in vertical or
horizontal lines. It
can move any
number of
unobstructed
squares found on
these lines, and in
any direction. If
an enemy piece
occupies a square
on these lines, it
may be captured
by the rook!
7. The Queen
• The queen is
the most
powerful
piece on the
chess board.
It combines
the
movements of
the rook and
the bishop
8. The king is the
most important
chess piece. If the
king is attacked -
“check” - and is
unable to escape
the attack, the
game is over –
“checkmate!”
The king moves
just like the queen,
but only one
square at a time in
any direction.
