Introduction
As much as people may disagree with me, I believe that the
teaching profession is one of the
noblest jobs that anyone can pursue. It involves shaping the
lives of little ones by impacting
knowledge that will guide them in their day to day lives. This is
one of the motivating factors
that have made me desire to become an English instructor once I
graduate. I am more than
committed to achieve a lot in this area even though people have
already discouraged me that I
4. cannot make it. To be a teacher, there are many requirements
that one has to fulfill before they
can qualify to teach and this is because the teaching profession
has been in existence since the
beginning of time and as a result there is a lot that pertains to
it;
Tasks
As mentioned earlier on, the teaching profession is one that has
been in existence for quite a long
time. This explains why with time, teachers’ duties have
escalated from just going to class to a
lot more in connecting with and socializing a child. Some of the
duties of a teacher include;
Planning, preparing and delivering lessons- This is one of the
core duties of a teacher.
Normally, there is a syllabus in all subjects taught which has to
be followed throughout the
course. It is the duty of the English teacher to first of all plan
on how they will go about the
coverage of the syllabus. Once they have assigned all parts of
the syllabus time, they need to
prepare. This will involve going back to the books and other
sources so as to understand and gain

more knowledge on the topic being taught. Going to class
without having prepared can be quite
frustrating especially if the students ask you a question that you
cannot answer (Harmer, 2008).
Finally, a teacher has to go to class to teach(delivery)

those students who may

further their studies in English
Giving and assessing the students’ work. The students have to
be given assignments that
will help them practice the English skills that they have learnt
6. in their lessons. Once they have
done the work, the teacher should go through their assignments
so as to see what they have learnt
and what still needs to be worked on.
Tools and Technology
Living in the 21st century has come with its own benefits
especially in the usage of machines in
our teaching and learning activities. Development has given a
teacher many tools that they can
use in their day to day activities namely;
Film and video- This technology can be used in the practice of
skills like pronunciation
and learning of new vocabulary (Harmer, 2007). The process is
aided by the fact that the videos
will provide a visual learning tool that is quite effective
Apps- Nowadays teachers can help in the creation of English
apps that the students can
use to study English in a fun manner. The app gives them a
chance to practice grammar rules but

also keeps track of the progress that they make. It is quite
convenient for the learner since they
can study at any time without needing the presence of a teacher

A good teacher is one who has undergone training and acquired
variety of skills that are needed
to survive and adequately deliver. Some of the skills that an

language, they have to be clear in the
way they express and use words
