AS to A2 Media Transition Project
Learning objectives for extended
             project
• By the end of this project you will:
• Be able to understand and evaluate the
  role of the GUMG
• Have conducted your own small study into
the effects of media on people’s beliefs
  about a contemporary issue
Starter : Iraq 2003
• Look at this picture. What happened
  here ?
Crowds and traffic

                  Iraq 2003 held back

What is GUMG
• A research unit based in Glasgow University
  since 1974
• Interested in the bias of the press- particularly
how the right wing view is often the dominant
  reading of the news
• They work from a neo-marxist perspective

• Interested in the bias of the press- particularly how the
right wing view is often the dominant reading of the news
• They work from a neo-marxist perspective
• Director : Professor Greg Philo
• Work on “unpopular” stories – e.g. The Representation
of the Miner’s strike; the Palestinian perspective in Israel
and most recently the origins of the Debt Crisis and what
  to do about it

• What is GUMG

                        Identify and explain
                          reasons why this
                         reading of events
     Summarise the
                        may not be popular
   key points made in
       the videos
TASK
• Using your handout
  – Chapter 2 from seeing is believing which describes
    the method
  – Profile from GUMG website
  – Your textbook

• You are going to construct a profile of the
Glasgow University Media Group in your notes
• This will take you the remainder of this lesson
and the first half of tomorrow’s lesson
Success Criteria
• A detailed profile of the work of the unit and a
summary of 3 relevant pieces of research (so
that you could refer to these in the exam)
• Using your textbook and other media sources
develop an critical view of the work of GUMG
• The profile will be around 500-700 words long
  and blalanced between both perspecives
• History is always written by the winners.
When two cultures clash, the loser is
obliterated, and the winner writes the
  history books-books which glorify their
own cause and disparage the conquered
foe. As Napoleon once said, 'What is
history, but a fable agreed upon?”
― Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code

Part 2.
Starter: The 1984 Miner’s Strike
• Watch the video
The Background:
• The miners' strike 1984/5 was a defining moment in British
industrial relations, and Its defeat significantly weakened the British
  trades union movement.
• The mines were a nationalised industry – owned by government.
The government felt it was paying too much for coal
• The strike was a response to threatened pit closures
• Mining is a dangerous and deadly job (many miners died young of
work related illnesses) but in the UK at the time they had good
terms and conditions and pay was better than in other manual work.
• It was seen as a major political and ideological victory for Margaret
  Thatcher and the Conservative Party.
• The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) was one of the strongest
unions in the country, viewed by many as having toppled
  governments.
• The miners' were on strike for a year but they lost
• The Thatcher government able to consolidate its fiscally
conservative programme. (e.g. selling off the coalmines, closing
others and generally worsening pay and conditions for working class
  people as a whole
• The dispute exposed deep divisions in British society and caused
considerable bitterness, especially in Northern England and in
  Wales.
The work of the GUMG
• GUMG researched the media effects of
  the strike
• Using PQRST – describe the methods
they used and what they found
Task 2
• Write up your analysis as an illustrated
  report – 500-700 words
• Describe method
• What they found
• Use images to illustrate
Plenary
• PMI
PART 3
• Watch the video of Greg Philo on News
Night talking about the wealth tax
• The Wealth Tax
• Summarise the key arguments (you can
use the information in your project pack )
TASK
• Using your information pack
  – The chapter on the research method GUMG used to
investigate the media effects on perceptions of the
    miner’s strike
  – The background info on the debt crisis
  – Construct your own research study on the impact of
the media on perceptions of the debt crisis.
  – You can interview/ set up groups of people in the
sixth form or adults outside school
  – As in the original methodology you need to select and
    provide appropriate images
Milestones
• Written methodology done
• Sampling procedure agreed and trialed
• Selection of images
• Research completed
• Written up results and conclusion
• Present findings (do you want an audience ?)
• Provisional completion date: 16th July 2012
