Rethinking The Wireless Industry Vision
A new form of mobile network & devices to
drive innovation, news experience and growth
Not just an upgrade or adding one “G” BUT
rethinking the business models, economics and
radio spectrum regulation & policies
To expand the wireless service beyond the
Telecom services and expand the eco-system to
support wider rage of vertical market

Challenges in Realising The 5G Vision
The performance requirements and targets vary
Enhanced, Massive & Ultra
Capacity requirement: Potentially the main driver for 5G
- could be dealt by 4G Small Cells in short and medium term
High data rate requirement: limited to certain service - 4G
does not really come short on the speed
Low latency requirement: limited to specific services - yet no
clear business models nor clear regulations
Coverage requirement: Ever existing in wireless systems -
Ultimately the barrier to ubiquitous coverage is not the technology
but the cost
TCO requirement: the ARPU for MBB, not likely to increase
but the cost elements on the rise

“ ~75% of traffic from multi-media by 2020”
“ 90% + of traffic from smartphones by 2022”
“~500 million to 2.6 billion by 2025”

Need a min of 500 MHz - 1 GHz
most efficient utilisation of low, mid
and high frequencies (per NW)
Realistic and pragmatic performance
targets and use cases needed
Harmonisation is a key to success
Timely reframing of spectrum
particularly in sub 3GHz
Combination of licensed and
unlicensed & shared and dedicated
spectrum allocation
Gradually shifting away from pure
operator-owned spectrum
8. Mobintec Ltd. Page 8June 2018
Extremely varying performance requirement
Spectrum availability & global
harmonisation still a major challenge
The overall cost of delivery ultimately a key
factor in deployment of new technologies
Best utilisation of the assets (spectrum):
indicate certain spectrum deployment
Time to bring none-traditional services
providers into the game
Readiness of the traditional Telco providers
to enter into new vertical segment
Today not clear what flavour of 5G will be launched first but it is likely to be eMBB

Concluding Remarks
The industry is doing a great job on the 5G technology side
Lack of clear business case for early 5G deployment (solid RoI)
Rush to 5G a threat for both vendors & operators - Still a lot of life in 4G & 4G+
Need to treat the 4G to 5G different to the 3G to 4G
Success depends on rethinking business models, partnerships, policies and regulation
Meaningful and win-win partnership between traditional Telco & new industries
Gov. bodies and policy maker to look at the radio spectrum as a serious challenge for
the wireless industry (harmonisation, allocation & ownership)
Service providers to revisit the willingness to greater degrees of sharing
Vendors to be more open to open Interfaces and true multivendor solutions
Need a true global effort and not just cross continent race for the 1st 5G!
