5. Classification of oral mucosa
Based upon
primary function
served
MasticatoryMucosa(25%)
e.g. gingivaandhardpalate
LiningMucosa(60%)
e.g., buccal,labialandalveolarmucosa
ventral surfaceofthetongue
Floorofthemouth& softpalate
SpecialisedMucosa(15%)
e.g. dorsumandlateralaspectofthetongue
Based upon
keratinisation
Keratinised
- Orthokeratinized
- Parakeratinized
Eg. Masticatorymucosa
Non-keratinized
Eg. Liningmucosa
14. THE ULTRA LEVEL EVENTS DURING KERATINIZATION
Tonofilaments Tonofibrils
Appearance of Odland bodies in the upper spinous layers.
Protein INVOLUCRIN making the inner cell wall of granularlayer
cells thicker.
Odland bodies fuses with cell membrane and discharge its contents
into the intercellular space to create a LIPID RICH
PERMEABILITY BARRIER.
Keratohyalin granules secrete protiens FILAGGRIN& LORICRIN
which will help aggregation of tonofibrils and cross linked by
disulphide bonds and facilitate dense packing of keratin filaments.
Nucleus and all other cell organelles disappear...cells totally
dehydrate and get densely packed with the protein keratin....results
in keratinized surface SQAMES.
