I am currently a science system technician install, maintain, calibrating,
configure and operating: temporary or permanently installed navigation and
communication systems, network and computing systems, dataloggers, water
sampling systems, meteorological systems, Multibeam and Singlebeam
echosounders, sonars, magnetometers, gravitymeters onboard scientific
research vessels and in the shore.
Support oceanographic research, develop applications in Labview, C, C++ and
object-orientated (Java, C++, Python, Pascal, FreePascal), and scripting (PHP,
Perl, Python, Ruby, CGI) programming languages; and MS-SQL, MySQL, SQlite,
Dbase, FoxBase, Foxpro database management systems and other scientific and
engineering software.
Supporting various Science Activity and system administration including:
* Morning checks of systems/software,
* Performing backups of data,
* Applying operating system updates, and configuration changes.
* Installing and configuring new hardware/software.
* Adding/deleting/creating/modifying user account information, resetting
passwords, etc.
* Answering technical queries.
* Responsibility for security.
* Responsibility for documenting the configuration of the system.
* Troubleshooting any reported problems.
* System performance tuning.
* Keeping the network up and running.
