Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the ruler of Abu Dhabi and founding father of the United Arab Emirates. He was born in the early 1920s in Abu Dhabi and spent his youth in Al Ain, where he learned leadership and administration. In 1966, he became ruler of Abu Dhabi and used the emirate's new oil wealth to rapidly develop infrastructure and social services. He played a key role in founding the UAE in 1971 and served as its first president until his death in 2004.
