Zakah is an obligatory charity in Islam that Muslims must pay if they have wealth exceeding a minimum amount. It is one of the five pillars of Islam. Zakah purifies wealth and benefits the poor and needy in society by redistributing wealth in a manner that reduces inequality. It is paid annually on money, business inventory, crops, cattle, treasures, minerals, and metals based on set percentages of accumulated wealth.

This paper discusses the prevailing system of zakat in Pakistan in perspective of objectives of Shari’ah and socio-economic factors of Pakistani society. It explores that zakat is an everlasting religious principle of economics and recognized by all the religions as one of the important obligations of that religion as it aims reduction of poverty and economic development. Talking about Pakistan, state-run zakat system was introduced during 1980 to eradicate poverty and to ensure a just and social economic system yet the target could not be achieved irrespective of the fact that Pakistani rich community is one of the generous communities of the world that helps the poor by way of charity. It is a matter of great concern that poverty ratio has been increasing day by day as more than 60% of the population is living below the poverty line. It leads that there is some flaws in the contemporary system of zakat collection, distribution and consumption due to which poverty could not be reduced. In this context, this research aims to discuss the issue in perspective of objectives of Shari’ah and socio-economic dynamics of Pakistani society.
It is estimated that 98% of Muslims don't know how to calculate their own Zakat. This presentation helps to understand the principles of Zakat, how to identify and value Zakatable Assets, who is required to pay Zakat, who is eligible to receive Zakat and how we can make Zakat effective. This is is based on Hanafi Fiqh and rates for Gold and Silver are as on 1 Ramadan 1440 (7 May 2019) in India. This presentation was made at a Zakat Simplified Workshop held in Kolkata (India) on 28/4/19 by Sirri Saqti Academy (named after the great Sufi Saint Hazrat Sirri Saqti (RA)). Its partner organisation The Sirri Saqti Foundation (www.saqti.org / fb.com/tssfindia ) works on social causes believing that it's 'better to light a candle than to curse the darkness'! 2. What is Zakah? Zakah is an obligatory charity that every Muslim has to pay if he or she has enough money. It is also the third pillar of Islam. It is a percentage of your wealth after nisaab.
3. Why is it called Zakah? Zakah is called Zakah because the general meaning is growing and purifying and that is what you do when you give Zakah. Your wealth grows and so does your reward in paradise.
4. Who has to give Zakah? Every Muslim has to give Zakah, once they have the required Nisaab for one whole year. Nisaab is the money that it left over after you have paid your necessities. Necessities are like food, drinks, clothes, bathroom stuff, car, etc.
5. How Zakah Helps the Community It helps balance the society so that the rich and the poor have closer amounts of money.
6. Who receives Zakah? Receivers of Zakah are the Al Furqaraa (the poor), Al Maskeen (the needy), Al Aamiloon (the Zakah officials), Al-Mu’allafatu Quloobuhum (friendly non Muslims or new Muslims), Ar- Riqaab (slaves and captives), Al- Ghaarimoon (debaters), Ibn-us-Sabeel (broke and stranded travelers).
