This document discusses how humans prefer narratives or stories over raw facts because stories help reduce dimensionality and are more comforting. Narratives fit information into a causal framework that is easier for humans to process and remember. However, this "narrative fallacy" can lead us to ignore facts that do not fit the narrative or seem less likely simply because they lack a complete story. The document provides several examples to illustrate this concept.
Three men are being held captive and forced to play Russian Roulette, taking turns shooting an revolver with one bullet loaded. Their lives are put in the hands of chance against their will. The film explores themes of power, violence, and the dark atmosphere created when human lives are manipulated for the entertainment of others. It draws comparisons to other films that feature Russian Roulette scenes, such as The Deer Hunter where soldiers are forced to play by their captors, and Leon where a young girl plays to prove loyalty, highlighting fear and manipulation.
The document compares three different types of films:
Mainstream - Fast and Furious 7 (2015) is the seventh installment in the popular action film franchise starring Vin Diesel. It follows the team living normal lives until a rogue assassin seeks revenge.
Independent - Fruitvale Station (2013) is Ryan Coogler's first feature film, based on the real-life police shooting of Oscar Grant. It was written and directed by Coogler as a one-off project.
Niche - Harry Potter is a series of novels by J.K. Rowling about a young wizard that were adapted into films. It has a specific target audience of fans of the books.
The document compares three different types of films: mainstream, independent, and niche.
The mainstream film discussed is Furious 7, the seventh installment of the popular Fast and Furious franchise starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker.
The independent film is Fruitvale Station, Ryan Coogler's first feature film telling the true story of Oscar Grant, who was killed by BART police.
The niche film discussed is Harry Potter, the beloved seven-book fantasy series by J.K. Rowling chronicling the story of Harry Potter and friends at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Harry's struggle against Lord Voldemort.
The document outlines a film pitch for a supernatural horror movie called "Occupied". The film will tell the story of a family that moves into a new home unknowingly occupied by an evil ghost. Their son befriends the entity, which they believe is an imaginary friend but turns out to be more sinister. As strange events occur, the family worries for their son's safety. The film aims to target a young adult audience between 16-25 years old with its teaser trailer and 15 rating certificate.

A gunfight ensues and Doc kills one of the criminals. He then hides the gold in the desert of Baja, Mexico. Unfortunately for Doc, he ends up buried in the same hole where he hid the gold, subverting expectations. Ray Breslin is a security expert who gets himself captured and sent to a secret maximum security floating prison to test its escape-proof design. In prison, he works with fellow inmate Emil Rottmayer to deduce they are trapped on a cargo ship. Breslin fakes a riot to escape with Rottmayer to the deck, where they fight guards and escape by helicopter. It is then revealed that Rottmayer is actually Breslin's ally Victor Mannheim, who orchestrated the mission to expose corruption.
This document discusses different theories of narrative structure. It defines narrative as having a beginning, middle, and end that organizes events in a causal relationship over time. Vladimir Propp identified 8 character archetypes that commonly appear in stories, such as heroes, villains, and helpers. Tzvetan Todorov described the typical structure of narratives as having an initial equilibrium that is disrupted, recognition of the disruption, an attempt to repair the damage, and a new equilibrium. Roland Barthes identified 5 codes that make up narratives, including action, referential, semantic, enigma, and symbolic codes. Claude Levi-Strauss discussed narratives involving binary opposites. Allan Cameron categorized modern narratives as anachronic, forking

Career goals serve as a roadmap for individuals, guiding them toward achieving long-term professional aspirations and personal fulfillment. Establishing clear career goals enables professionals to focus their efforts on developing specific skills, gaining relevant experience, and making strategic decisions that align with their desired career trajectory. By setting both short-term and long-term objectives, individuals can systematically track their progress, make necessary adjustments, and stay motivated. Short-term goals often include acquiring new qualifications, mastering particular competencies, or securing a specific role, while long-term goals might encompass reaching executive positions, becoming industry experts, or launching entrepreneurial ventures.
Moreover, having well-defined career goals fosters a sense of purpose and direction, enhancing job satisfaction and overall productivity. It encourages continuous learning and adaptation, as professionals remain attuned to industry trends and evolving job market demands. Career goals also facilitate better time management and resource allocation, as individuals prioritize tasks and opportunities that advance their professional growth. In addition, articulating career goals can aid in networking and mentorship, as it allows individuals to communicate their aspirations clearly to potential mentors, colleagues, and employers, thereby opening doors to valuable guidance and support. Ultimately, career goals are integral to personal and professional development, driving individuals toward sustained success and fulfillment in their chosen fields.

Why Psychological Safety Matters for Software Teams - ACE 2024 - Ben Linders.pdfBen Linders
Psychological safety in teams is important; team members must feel safe and able to communicate and collaborate effectively to deliver value. It’s also necessary to build long-lasting teams since things will happen and relationships will be strained.
But, how safe is a team? How can we determine if there are any factors that make the team unsafe or have an impact on the team’s culture?
In this mini-workshop, we’ll play games for psychological safety and team culture utilizing a deck of coaching cards, The Psychological Safety Cards. We will learn how to use gamification to gain a better understanding of what’s going on in teams. Individuals share what they have learned from working in teams, what has impacted the team’s safety and culture, and what has led to positive change.
Different game formats will be played in groups in parallel. Examples are an ice-breaker to get people talking about psychological safety, a constellation where people take positions about aspects of psychological safety in their team or organization, and collaborative card games where people work together to create an environment that fosters psychological safety.
