Term 4: William takes control
Your task: If you say the date 1066 most people will be able to tell you that this was
the last time anybody successfully invaded Britain. It was when the Normans invaded
England and William the Conqueror won at the Battle Hastings.
Historians get their information from sources that have been left behind. As a
historian it is important to be able to find out information using the sources. Your
task is to investigate the sources in this booklet and answer all of the questions about
the Battle of Hastings.
“He led his forces with
great skill, stopping
them when they
turned to run away. He
gave them courage
and shared their
danger. He was heard
shouting them to
follow him rather than
go ahead of him. It is
clear that it was
William’s bravery that
inspired his soldiers as
they went forward
because he gave them
courage.”
Neatly underline with a ruler which of the
following sentence you think best sums up this
solder’s feelings of William Duke of Normandy?
• He thought William Duke of Normandy was a
bad leader.
• He thought William was friendly.
• He thought William could have done more to
lead his men.
• He thought William was a good leader who
inspired his men.
b) Explain why you have chosen the statement
you have and which part of the source have you
used to come to your answer

Taken from a history textbook from the 1980s.
“Three horses were killed under William. Three times he leapt unafraid to
the ground and the man who had killed his horse. This shows how quick he
was to make his mind up and how strong he was. With savage blows of his
sword, he split shields, helmets and coats of chain mail. He hit the enemy
with his own shield. William’s soldiers took courage when they saw him
fighting on foot. Some, who were weak from bleeding kept fighting
because they saw him fighting. William helped some of his men to safety.”
