3. Choosing a photographer to
study (aesthetics)?
For this weeks task you need to research and choose a photographer to explore by looking at their visual
style. Remember that the visual style is something that you will need to incorporate into your exam shoot in a
few weeks so choose someone that you love but also that you know you can use in your own work. Choose a
photographer whose lighting, use of composition, leading lines, framing, angles, scale, use of colour or lack
of, texture, atmosphere or perspective interests you.
Diane Arbus
For example, Diane Arbus is a photographer of
people. She tries to capture the true person and
character in the way she photographs them. She
has a ‘documentary’ style where she captures the
individual in their own setting using natural light. If
your theme was to explore the raw and true
character of unstaged shots of people she would
be fantastic to look at. You would look at all the
aesthetic aspects listed above to see how she
manages this, then apply a little of it to your future
shoot.
4. Week 2 - 1st June 2020
Create at LEAST three slides on a
chosen Photographer whose
aesthetics inspire you. Use the
‘Photographer support sheets’ to
format this page and support what to
write.
Write about why you have chosen
them, how it links to your project
theme and how it might inspire future
shoots.
Deadline: Monday 8th June
