1. This is a ‘Hypothetical brief’, meaning that we have made it up, but it is exactly the
type of project that you might be set if you were a Graphic Designer working for a
company.
2. All of this work WILL COUNT towards your GCSE GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION
coursework, and will be marked on the Assessment matrix with the Assessment
Objectives, so it is really important that you complete as much work set as
possible. Just to remind you, this is what we are working to, but you don’t need to
worry about these objectives, you will automatically fulfil them by completing the
work:
• Assessment Objective 1: Artist/Designer Research
• Assessment Objective 2: Experimenting with materials and techniques.
• Assessment Objective 3: Making Observations in the form of Photography and
Drawings.
• Assessment Objective 4: Final Ideas and Responses.
3. Please DO NOT worry about physically PRINTING WORK at the moment, as we will
be giving you time to print work at school. Once printed, we will be mounting it
and presenting it with your Cityscape work in your A2 PRESENTATION Portfolios.
4. Please make sure that you stick to deadlines set, and make sure that you upload
work for us to view in the correct Assignment Folders
5. This brief is likely to continue into September as we have had to adjust all of the
projects, so it is important to start now, so that we can continue in the new term.
Fingers crossed most of this work will be completed at school, so don’t worry
about not having the correct materials at home, we will make sure that
everything set now, is work that can be completed and managed in the ‘home’
environment.
6. Lastly, enjoy it, we are really excited about this brief, and I think you will get some
fantastic design work out of it.
You are a Graphic Designer working for a
large design company, who have just been
asked by the St Albans Museum and Gallery
in partnership with the NHS, to produce a
series of graphics pieces that will go on
display in the main exhibition hall, for a
future display on ‘life in the city, during
lockdown’. As a designer, you will be
working on this project in various stages,
and your investigations will include:
* Researching the other Artists and
Designers.
* Taking Photographs and completing
drawing studies of life in lockdown.
* Using lots of materials and techniques to
produce Artwork.
* Developing Ideas and Final Pieces that
will go on display within the Gallery for
the exhibition.
You will be producing a number of exciting graphics
pieces throughout this project and work produced will
form part of you GSCE Graphics portfolios.
Life as we know it has changed dramatically in the
last few months, and we have had to come to
terms with living with totally different living
conditions within our daily lives. Over the past few
weeks, you will have seen a number of images in
the media, documenting life in Lockdown, and
scenes of empty towns and cities that we have
never seen before as the country has shut down.
These two tasks must be done over the next two weeks, and over the May
half term holiday. We would prioritise the Photography task, before more
and more businesses and shops are allowed to start opening.
Complete a ‘Mood Board’ of images as a
starting point to this brief. Remember, you
have done this before, and spend time
collecting images and idea from the internet.
You could also copy and paste some
newspaper headlines and front pages along
with images that you find.
If you can, set up two document pages on
PowerPoint slides, A3 in size, so that you can
print them when we are back in school and
them mount them onto a sheet of A2 card
that can then be put into your portfolios.
Take a Photoshoot of ‘life during Lock-down’. You may
choose to do more than one shoot, if you want to photograph several
aspects of the lockdown and being quarantined in the City (St Albans).
• Empty town centre or City centre
(e.g. St Albans)
• Empty roads and streets.
• Deserted areas:
Playgrounds/Parks
• Closed shops, businesses, Cafes
• Desolate Industrial areas.
• Life inside the home.
• Family Lock down.
• Daily routines
