- 4. Roman Numerals forTriads Because all Major keys have the same chords as you move up the scale. Roman numerals are used to to identify that within a key the chords are different. But each chord functions the same way between keys. (note) although not shown here, to show that a chord is a augmented chord because of its relationship with the major triad it uses a capital roman numeral and it’s + symbol.
