The answer is simply: having and implementing a vision that will allow it to secure its future in this age of disruption — the Global Logistics Hub Initiative. Jamaica’s Global Logistics Hub Initiative is Jamaica’s response for building a resilient and sustainable nation in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Artificial Intelligence (AI), robots, automation, and the Internet of Things (IoT) — the Fourth industrial Revolution — are all tech terms that have moved into the mainstream of our everyday conversations. Unfortunately the talk is usually one of doom and gloom, punctuated by predictions such as: Robots could displace 800 million jobs. With such grim predictions, who would not pay attention? So what can a small island developing state like Jamaica do to get ready for this future?
It’s important to understand that, as William Gibson stated: “The future is already here — it’s just not very evenly distributed.” The Fourth industrial Revolution is already here — it’s just not evenly distributed. And this represents an opportunity for Jamaica.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution can be boiled down to three things:
1. Connectivity
2. Flows
3. Management of connectivity and flows.
In a word: logistics.
Competitiveness, in our globalized world is increasingly based on one’s ability to understand, connect and manoeuvre within and between the various networks that make the world work. The Logistics Performance Index (LPI) 2014 put it succinctly: “Improving logistics performance is at the core of the economic growth and competitiveness agenda.”

Estonians are e-believers. We are proud to be pioneers and leaders in e-government. We have developed and implemented innovative solutions that improve the lives of millions, and we intend to develop more.
In Estonia we can see a version of the interconnected and computerized future that is inextricably a part of the fundamental operations of society: 25% of the electorate votes online, nearly 100% of prescriptions and tax returns are done online, as is almost all banking. Estonians have given 140 million digital signatures, and last December, Estonian and Finnish PMs signed the first international treaty digitally. Adding to this near 100% broadband coverage and countrywide Wi-Fi, Estonia is one of the most wired countries in the world.
As a country so dependent on digital solutions, the whole of ICT infrastructure must
be regarded as an “ecosystem” in which everything is interconnected. It functions as
a whole, thus it needs to be defended as a whole. The more digitized we are, the more
vulnerable we are. It is therefore crucial to understand that cyber security is not just a matter of blocking the bad things a cyber attack can do; it is one of protecting all the good things that cyber insecurity can prevent us from doing – in other words, cyber security should not be seen as an additional cost but as an enabler, guarding our entire digital way of life.

In this address, Professor Leinonen will discuss ‘meta-design’, which means design of ‘things’ for educators to design their own teaching and for learners to design their own learning. He will also present a generic Finnish / Northern European perspective on ICT in education, which he and his colleagues aim to make a pan-European model through a project entitled Innovative Technologies for an Engaging Classroom (iTEC). iTEC is a four-year, large-scale project that takes an informed look the potential classrooms of the future. With 27 project partners, including 14 Ministries of Education and funding from the European Commission of 9.45 million Euros, iTEC will provide a model describing how the deployment of technology in support of innovative teaching and learning activities can move beyond small scale pilots and become embedded in all Europe's schools. iTEC is being piloted in over 1,000 classrooms in 12 countries, making it by the most significant pan-European validation of ICT in schools yet undertaken.

Estonians are e-believers. We are proud to be pioneers and leaders in e-government. We have developed and implemented innovative solutions that improve the lives of millions, and we intend to develop more.
In Estonia we can see a version of the interconnected and computerized future that is inextricably a part of the fundamental operations of society: 25% of the electorate votes online, nearly 100% of prescriptions and tax returns are done online, as is almost all banking. Estonians have given 140 million digital signatures, and last December, Estonian and Finnish PMs signed the first international treaty digitally. Adding to this near 100% broadband coverage and countrywide Wi-Fi, Estonia is one of the most wired countries in the world.
As a country so dependent on digital solutions, the whole of ICT infrastructure must
be regarded as an “ecosystem” in which everything is interconnected. It functions as
a whole, thus it needs to be defended as a whole. The more digitized we are, the more
vulnerable we are. It is therefore crucial to understand that cyber security is not just a matter of blocking the bad things a cyber attack can do; it is one of protecting all the good things that cyber insecurity can prevent us from doing – in other words, cyber security should not be seen as an additional cost but as an enabler, guarding our entire digital way of life.

European perspectives on design for learning in the 21 century
Keynote at the National Conference about flexible learning, 15-17 July Wrest Point Conference Centre, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia / Australasian Association of Distance Education Schools.
In this address, Professor Leinonen will discuss ‘meta-design’, which means design of ‘things’ for educators to design their own teaching and for learners to design their own learning. He will also present a generic Finnish / Northern European perspective on ICT in education, which he and his colleagues aim to make a pan-European model through a project entitled Innovative Technologies for an Engaging Classroom (iTEC). iTEC is a four-year, large-scale project that takes an informed look the potential classrooms of the future. With 27 project partners, including 14 Ministries of Education and funding from the European Commission of 9.45 million Euros, iTEC will provide a model describing how the deployment of technology in support of innovative teaching and learning activities can move beyond small scale pilots and become embedded in all Europe's schools. iTEC is being piloted in over 1,000 classrooms in 12 countries, making it by the most significant pan-European validation of ICT in schools yet undertaken.

The Prince and the Pauper is a new opera based on Mark Twain’s classic novel of the same name. The story tells of two boys who are born on the same day in London – one a pauper named Tom Canty, the other the Prince of Wales. By a twist of fate they meet and decide to trade identities for a day, with unexpected and amusing consequences.
