Colin Eagan, a 2004 graduate of Davidson College with an English degree, gave a presentation titled "You Don't Have to Go to Law School: A Career Guide for Liberal Arts Graduates in the Digital Age." The presentation discusses alternative career paths to law school for liberal arts graduates and outlines Eagan's own non-traditional career journey after graduating. It also shares results from a survey of current Davidson students about their career plans and stresses. Eagan encourages students to choose a career that "feels right" and matches their interests and skills rather than feeling pressured into law school.
This presentation is to help teens learn about the do's and don't of social media. This presentation will help youth build their brand on-line for summer jobs, internships, scholarships and future careers

CAREER IN LAW
WHAT IS LAW?
Besides being financially lucrative, Law is an adventurous and thrilling career option. Consequently, the degree equips you, not just to be an accomplished lawyer but also a businessman, bureaucrat, diplomat, social activist or academician. It goes without saying that financially, the profession is hugely rewarding.
Generally it’s a male–dominated field, but prospects for women are now-a-days improving in legal firms, corporate houses as legal advisors. Specialization in a single focused branch, there are short diploma courses. To practice, it is mandatory to put in a year’s internship.
WHAT MAKES YOU A DEMANDING LAWYER?
Good intellectual ability, the ability to assimilate and analyze facts quickly, excellent communication and presentation skills, self confidence, and physical and mental stamina to cope with the long hours of work and work related stress. 1,200 to 1,500 lawyers enroll every year.

You Don’t Have to Go to Law School: A Career Guide for Liberal Arts Graduates in the Digital Age | By Colin Eagan, M.S. 2014
You're getting toward the end of your senior year at Davidson.
People are starting to ask "what are you going to do after this?"
But there's a problem. You are an English major (or history
major or philosophy major). You're not qualified to do anything
(or at least it feels that way).
So you have to ask the question that all English majors have
asked themselves since English majors were invented…
TELL ME IF THIS SOUNDS FAMILIAR …

1. Consulting Firm Analyst
• Have specific roles for non-experienced undergrads
• Pros: Crash course on “the business world” – and get paid!
• Cons: Formulaic
• Examples: Accenture, Deloitte. Booz Allen, Mckinsey
2. Marketing Assistant, etc.
• Take an entry level job at an agency, marketing firm, etc.
• Pros: Get paid (but not much) to learn the environment
• Cons: Can be very difficult to get these randomly
3. Internship (unpaid if necessary)
• Companies do post internships for recent grads
• Sometimes unpaid can be worth it for experience (just make sure it
leads to something paid before long)
Remember Rule #3 – best way to find these is to talk to people!

1. Wait a few years.
Law school will be there in a few years. Admissions committees will
want to see that you have thought through your decision and aren't just
doing it for lack of options.
2. Visit law schools.
(or any other schools you're interested in). Visits will usually include
sitting in on classes. If they don't, ask to. Talk to students. See what you
think. Imagine yourself in that environment. For three years.
3. Break it down.
Saying you want to 'be a lawyer' is like saying you want to 'cure cancer.'
Cancer is actually hundreds of different diseases. What specifically do
you want to do in law? Do you like litigation or transactional law? Do
you want to work at a big firm or small firm? Do you even know what
lawyers do? Law school will teach you these things, but its an expensive
way to find out. If you're un-sure, do some research.
IF YOU’RE NOT SURE…
