Yosemite
An amazing National Park!! The total size of the park is
761,266.28 acres. It has some of the highest waterfalls in the
world! It also has a wildlife preserve!!!
The Yosemite was founded by whites in 1851. Pioneers
started exploring the area in 1850. Maj. James D. was leading
Marisopa Battalion in pursuit of a band of Indians they where
raiding mining camps. The Yosemite was set a side for a state park
in 1864. It was named the Nations third state park in 1890. The
reason why it was made a park is because of its wondrous beauties,
waterfalls, and wildlife.
The Yosemite has some amazing plants, animals, and
features! One of the most important plants is the giant sequoia
tree. They are some of the tallest and oldest living things on earth
today! These beautiful trees are located all over the park. There is
one special place for these trees and it is Mariposa Grove. These
groves have been preserved for this amazing tree. Some other
trees are Yellow pine which is the most influential of the valley
trees. There are also Sugar pines and there is very few of them
left. Some flowers are lilies and columbines and many more! There
are many animals that live in the Yosemite some are coyotes,
marmots, chipmunks, mule deer, and black bears. Some Natural
Features are that there is a wildlife preserve it is 1,200 acres. It
is located on the western edge of the Sierra Nevada. Many people
do bird watching there. There is also The Half Dome it is the
Yosemite's world famous land mark. The Yosemite falls are 13
times as tall as Niagara Falls. The Yosemite falls are the highest
waterfalls in North America. As you can see there are a lot of
amazing plants, animals, and features!
There is a lot of history and culture to the Yosemite! For
example the reason that the park is named Yosemite is because of
the village that lived in the valley! They were part of the Miwok
tribe and were sometimes called the Yosemite Indians because of
their totem! Indian people have lived in this region for as long as
8,000 years. The first sightings of Yosemite Valley was by white
people in 1833 by the Joseph Walker party. The first real known
entry into the valley was not until 1849 because of the discovery of
gold in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Many thousands of miners came
to the Sierra to seek their fortune in gold. Their arrival resulted in
war with the native people who wanted to protect their homeland,
because of this interaction the Marisopa Battalion was created as a
punatitive expedition to bring an end to the "Marisopa Indian War".
The battalion entered Yosemite Valley when searching for the
Indians on March 27, 1851. As you can see there is a lot of history
that I told you and there is a lot more!
Some challenges this park faces now are that there are too
many tourists. There are so many tourists that they can't handle
them all. Another problem that they are facing is that when there
is a storm and lightning strikes it causes fires to burn trees and
kills animal’s habitats. These challenges are challenges so what you
can do to help if you go there is to listen to the people that work
there.
The Yosemite is an amazing National Park. It is an amazing place to
go and go for a walk or even go hiking. You can do things all year
round. But do not forget all the little things that make this a
beautiful park.
