Our Association serves the population of the GTA including Toronto and the surrounding regions of Durham, Peel, York, Halton and Dufferin County. In partnership with more than 250 organizations, we offer a variety of programs responding to the needs of the community, including employment education and placement, newcomer programs, youth and outreach intervention, fitness and recreation, child care and camps. - #39 You may well have come across the notion of 'Global Citizenship', but what does it mean? It is a term being used increasingly in educational circles, and consequently there are a variety of views about what it is. These range from the idea that everyone is a citizen of the globe to the standpoint that in a legal sense there is no such thing as a global citizen. Global Citizenship is more than the sum of its parts. It goes beyond simply knowing that we are citizens of the globe to an acknowledgement of our responsibilities both to each other and to the Earth itself. Global Citizenship is about understanding the need to tackle injustice and inequality, and having the desire and ability to work actively to do so. It is about valuing the Earth as precious and unique, and safeguarding the future for those coming after us. Global Citizenship is a way of thinking and behaving. It is an outlook on life, a belief that we can make a difference. We see a Global Citizen as someone who: is aware of the wider world and has a sense of their own role as a world citizen; respects and values diversity; has an understanding of how the world works economically, politically, socially, culturally, technologically and environmentally; is outraged by social injustice; participates in and contributes to the community at a range of levels from local to global; is willing to act to make the world a more sustainable place; takes responsibility for their actions.

- #41 Embedded in who we are : it is in the DNA of the YMCA since its beginnings. It is how the movement grow across the world into the 124 Ys that are part of our network today. It was first through the Foreign Service that later transformed into the World Service, and it is today through the International Program that we continue strengthening the global network through mutual cooperation, enabling local YMCAs to serve better the communities we work in. Each of the commitments of Challenge 21 is a call for action at the global level that we will not be able to fulfill unless we work in cooperation: “• Sharing the good news of Jesus Christ and striving for spiritual, intellectual and physical well-being of individuals and wholeness of communities. • Empowering all, especially young people and women to take increased responsibilities and assume leadership at all levels and working towards an equitable society. • Advocating for and promoting the rights of women and upholding the rights of children. • Fostering dialogue and partnership between people of different faiths and ideologies and recognizing the cultural identities of people and promoting cultural renewal. • Committing to work in solidarity with the poor, dispossessed, uprooted people and oppressed racial, religious and ethnic minorities. • Seeking to be mediators and reconcilers in situations of conflict and working for meaningful participation and advancement of people for their own self-determination. • Defending God’s creation against all that would destroy it and preserving and protecting the earth’s resources for coming generations. To face these challenges, the YMCA will develop patterns of co-operation at all levels that enable self-sustenance and self-determination.” It is an effective mechanism to strengthen our own communities, our youth, and our association – we have realized that International Cooperation is not just about what we can do for our partners and their communities but it is about what we can do together and also about what we can learn from them. We have discovered that there are areas in which we have great lessons to learn from our partners as individuals, as organization as a society from learning about Southern partners. We believe our mission goes beyond our borders . Environmental, economic, and cultural forces move across the globe with increasing fluidity. In an area like the GTA, the international flow of people, goods, ideas, and challenges is especially palpable. As of 2006 about half of Toronto residents were foreign-born. Statistics Canada projects that by 2031, four in five Torontonians (78%) will be an immigrant or the Canadian-born child of an immigrant. Given these circumstances, it is only by understanding and engaging with the global context that we can truly understand and engage with our own local communities. The international aspect of the YMCA’s work deepens our relationships with those we serve in the GTA, especially youth, who are increasingly global in their thinking. Many members and staff are also more convinced of the YMCA’s relevance because of our international activities.

- #43 In our commitment to mutual learning and growth we have eight international partnerships. Each partership is very particular and adapts and changes according to the circumstances of both YMCA, its strategic plans and their enviroments. That is how we currently support projects in Senegal, Ghana and Colombia that target particurlary youth and women in the local communities. This projects are implemented by the local association who is the expert in the local issues. Some of the areas of this projects are: Sexual Education, Civic Engagement, Environment, youth entrepreneurship. Through this projects over 20,00 0 youth are reach out every year. Global awareness is integrated into programs for children, youth and adults at YMCA Centers across the GTA. Each year over 24,000 people participate in gobal awareness events and activities.
