PERSONAL STATEMENT
I have an Honours and Masters Graduate from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. I gained my honours
degree in Civil Engineering in 2000 and completed a Master Degree in Fire Engineering in 2002.
I have over 13 years experiences working as a fire engineer in New Zealand, Australia, and U.A.E involving in both
prescriptive and performance based fire safety designs. I have been working in U.A.E since June 2014. Prior to
moving to Dubai, I practised as a fire engineer in New Zealand (from 2002 to 2007), and Australia (from 2007 to
2014).
I have experience in performance based fire safety building designs for a range of commercial, retail, residential,
industrial, health care, exhibition buildings, correctional centre, and existing/heritage buildings upgrade.
Over my career, I have regularly interaction with clients, architects, other consultants, building certifiers, and fire
brigades. I have extensive site inspection experiences checking the construction and system installation meet the
intent of the fire safety design. Yen also acts as a project manager on many projects, which involves preliminary
contract review, budget monitoring, and resource managing.
I have high attention to details, and am known as a helpful enthusiastic person with a great “can do” attitude.
I hold a New Zealand passport which allows me to travel freely between UAE, Qatar and Oman.
I have a full clean driving licence.

Block 2 has two residential towers linked by a podium used for retail, food court, and
recreational centre, Block 5 consists of three residential towers with retail tenancies located
on the street access level, and they are all linked by a common basement carpark.
Yen has worked as the fire safety engineer within a multi-discipline team to advise on the
fire engineering solutions. The benefits of fire engineering include justifying the reduced
smoke exhaust rate for the atrium in Block 2, allowing extending travel distances to an exit
(up to 12m) from the unit door to an exit, and omitting zone smoke control system
requirement on the non-residential levels of these buildings.
Yen has worked closely with the architect to develop fire engineering solution meeting the
design objective; organizing meetings and liaising with the approval authorities presenting
the proposed fire safety strategy.
• Al Bustan Complex Mixed Use Development (Abu Dhabi)
The project scope consists of the construction of a multipurpose complex with a built-up
area of 243,000 square metres. The complex includes an underground car parking over five
levels, two residential buildings, a serviced apartment building a hotel, and a 30,000 square
metre office building. Yen worked on this project by attending site inspections, witnessing
the active system testing, providing internal review of the fire and life safety design of the
project to ensure that the building design meet the prescriptive building code requirements.

• Leighton HQ project (QLD, Australia)
Leighton HQ development comprise of two new mixed use office and retail towers over a
common basement carpark, which located at the fringe of Brisbane CBD. Both towers have
unique atria design providing the visual connectivity between multiple levels of the
tenancies. Yen was the project engineer on this project. She has provided fire engineering
design to provide cost effective design solutions for the design team. The benefits of fire
engineering include:
o Using the combination of sprinkler protected glazing and fire curtains to mitigate fire
and smoke spread via the atria within the two towers instead of using mechanical
smoke exhaust system;
o reducing the fire rating from 180 minutes to 120 minutes in retail shops to reduce
construction cost;
o omitting the need of zone smoke control system to the retail levels, and providing a
cost effective solution to mitigate smoke spread to other parts of the building;
o permitting extended travel distances from the office levels and the carpark levels and
increase the flexibility for the tenancy fitout.

• Al Taweelah Substations (Abu Dhabi, UAE)
• Self-storage building at 18 Flexman Place (Auckland, New Zealand)
The business owner owns a number of self-storage buildings in Australia, and he was planning to extend the
self-storage business to New Zealand. Yen’s fire team was engaged to perform a fire engineering solution for
the building because the owner has already ordered the construction material, and prefabricated the building
members. Due to the different fire rating requirements in New Zealand, the prefabricated building members
do not meet the fire rating requirement. Yen worked with the design team to justify the fire rating requirement,
and investigate into options of providing fire rating to the members. The fire engineering design reduces the
cost impact on the building owner, and allows the self-storage building gaining approval.
