The 2011-2012 board is pleased to issue the first ISACA Vancouver Chapter Year in Review Report, which was distributed at our AGM on June 26, 2012.
35 years ago, on July 5, 1977, Dr. Hart J. Will, Associate Professor at UBC, along with other key assurance professionals, submitted a Chapter Formation Proposal. The following year, in 1978, the Vancouver Chapter was established.
As President of the ISACA Vancouver Chapter for 2011-2012, I and the rest of the board are honoured and privileged to have played a part towards building upon our chapter’s history. We are pleased to have been able to continue to honour the traditions and expectations set by previous Presidents and boards before us. We are also proud to have made our own accomplishments, established our own firsts, and set our own milestones into the contribution of our long standing and reputable chapter’s history.

Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

AI Trends in Creative Operations 2024 by Artwork Flow.pdfmarketingartwork
Creative operations teams expect increased AI use in 2024. Currently, over half of tasks are not AI-enabled, but this is expected to decrease in the coming year. ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool currently. Business leaders are more actively exploring AI benefits than individual contributors. Most respondents do not believe AI will impact workforce size in 2024. However, some inhibitions still exist around AI accuracy and lack of understanding. Creatives primarily want to use AI to save time on mundane tasks and boost productivity.
Organizational culture includes values, norms, systems, symbols, language, assumptions, beliefs, and habits that influence employee behaviors and how people interpret those behaviors. It is important because culture can help or hinder a company's success. Some key aspects of Netflix's culture that help it achieve results include hiring smartly so every position has stars, focusing on attitude over just aptitude, and having a strict policy against peacocks, whiners, and jerks.

Google's Just Not That Into You: Understanding Core Updates & Search IntentLily Ray
1. Core updates from Google periodically change how its algorithms assess and rank websites and pages. This can impact rankings through shifts in user intent, site quality issues being caught up to, world events influencing queries, and overhauls to search like the E-A-T framework.
2. There are many possible user intents beyond just transactional, navigational and informational. Identifying intent shifts is important during core updates. Sites may need to optimize for new intents through different content types and sections.
3. Responding effectively to core updates requires analyzing "before and after" data to understand changes, identifying new intents or page types, and ensuring content matches appropriate intents across video, images, knowledge graphs and more.

History of ISACA and theVancouver Chapter
3. Message from the
President
Welcome to the first ISACA Vancouver Chapter Year in Review Report! As indicated on the front cover of this report, our Vancouver Chapter was
established in 1978. It was actually 35 years ago - on July 5, 1977, that Dr. Hart J. Will, an Associate Professor at UBC, along with other local like minded
assurance professionals, officially proposed and submitted a Chapter Formation application - a key milestone into the history of our local chapter.
There has been a lot that has transpired and evolved within Information Technology and Systems over 35 years, and in turn, ISACA has grown and
transformed within that time to have become a leading global provider of knowledge, certifications, community, advocacy and education on
information systems assurance, control and security, enterprise governance of IT, and IT-related risk and compliance to more than 100,000 constituents
in more than 180 countries in Asia, Latin America, Europe, Africa, North America and Oceania.
Likewise, the maturity and recognition of our profession within the Lower Mainland, has grown as well. Of my 8 years as an ISACA member, 6 years of it
serving on the board, I have seen first hand that it is the volunteers of the Vancouver Chapter and professionals in our membership that has contributed
the most to this maturing, knowledge sharing, and recognition within our local business, educational, and regulatory community over the last 35 years.
As President of the ISACA Vancouver Chapter for 2011-2012, I and the rest of the board are honoured and privileged to have played a part towards
building upon our chapter’s history. We are pleased to have been able to continue to honour the traditions and expectations set by previous Presidents
and boards before us. We are also proud to have made our own accomplishments, established our own firsts, and set our own milestones into the
contribution of our long standing and reputable chapter’s history.
We hope you enjoy this Year in Review Report and invite you to share your feedback and ideas with us in ways to improve and grow our chapter, as well
as mature our profession, and contribute to our local community for many years to come.
Sincerely,
Michael Leung

objectives have been created for
application at the international
and local chapter levels…
In addition, a balanced scorecard
for both the international and
local chapter levels has also been
developed…
5. Chapter Balanced
Scorecard
ISACA utilizes the “balanced scorecard”
methodology at the international and
chapter levels to assess current levels and
track progress on ISACA’s overall strategy.
The balanced scorecard was developed in
the early 1990’s by Drs. Robert Kaplan and
David Norton as a management system that
enables organizations to clarify their vision
and strategy and translate them into action.
These are reviewed annually by the ISACA
Vancouver Chapter Board for planning and
self-assessment. The chapter balanced
scorecard is a tool to enable all ISACA
chapters to progress ISACA's strategy at the
local level and to communicate their
implementation with ISACA centrally.
All chapters are required to annually submit
a completed rating grid as part of their
required reporting to ISACA International
HQ within 30 days of their AGM.
Based upon the component activities
outlined within each objective, our chapter
ratings were assessed and assigned for each
where our overall chapter rating was a 4.04 –
where we were making improvements to an
overall previous chapter capability.

7. Financials
Income
Key sources of income for the Vancouver Chapter in
2011-2012 continue to be derived from our monthly
lunch education sessions and local chapter
membership dues remitted from ISACA International.
This year, for those who directly requested and
expressed interest for us to offer a CISA Exam Review
Course, we subsidized this offering as well as hosted
this course locally.
Expenses
Key expenses for the Vancouver Chapter continue to
be in the facilities and catering of the monthly lunch
education sessions. For the first time since we started
hosting our education sessions as a Chapter, we finally
acquired our own Chapter projector and rented a
storage locker, as opposed to borrowing from, and
storing items at one of our associated employer’s
office.
This year we also co-hosted a social networking event
with the IIA Chapter at no cost to our members.
Each year, International funds one board member to
attend the annual ISACA Leadership Conference and
invites up to two board members from each Chapter to
attend at the Chapter’s cost. This year’s Leadership
Conference was hosted in Orlando, Florida where we
sent the incoming President, and two dedicated and
committed board members to build upon and
strengthen the future leadership of the board.
We were also pleased this year to have been able to
continue to give back financially to the community and
overall profession. This year, we sponsored and
donated to UBC Biztech, BCIT, and ITGI.
(unaudited financials to mid-June)
Every year, the ISACA Vancouver Chapter is required to submit proof that a
person independent of our board verifies that our finances are in order. An
independent audit/verification letter is required to be sent to ISACA
InternationalHQ within 30 days of our AGM for our Chapter to be compliant.

This year, we were able to meet our goal of maintaining our chapter membership retention target of
85%. Unfortunately, we were not able to achieve the aggressive goal we set for ourselves in growing
our chapter membership by 5%; however, we were able to acquire and attract the highest amount of
new members to our chapter in comparison to other years. It should be noted that we did have a
higher number of members transfer out of our chapter to other chapters which would have
contributed to the lower membership numbers for the year.

Hart J. Will 1978-?
ISACA got its start in 1967, when a
small group of individuals with similar
jobs—auditing controls in the computer
systems that were becoming
increasingly critical to the operations of
their organizations—sat down to discuss
the need for a centralized source of
information and guidance in the field. In
1969, the group formalized,
incorporating as the EDP Auditors
Association.
In 1976 the association formed an
education foundation to undertake
large-scale research efforts to expand
the knowledge and value of the IT
governance and control field.
Previously known as the Information
Systems Audit and Control
Association, ISACA now goes by its
acronym only, to reflect the broad range
of IT governance professionals it serves.
35 years ago, on July 5, 1977, Dr. Hart
J. Will, Associate Professor at UBC,
along with other key assurance
professionals from company names still
recognizable today, submitted a
Chapter Formation Proposal.
The following year, in 1978, the
Vancouver Chapter was established,
and the rest they say is history…
