This document discusses how social science research can help understand the human experience and dynamics of telehealth initiatives. It summarizes a study that used conversation analysis to compare communication in face-to-face and telemedicine consultations. The study found that telemedicine requires constant negotiation of new communication skills and roles due to its novelty, additional participants, inability to physically examine patients, and use of technology. More social science research is needed to optimize telehealth planning and implementation through low-cost, valid methods and user involvement.
