- Good morning! Lately, there has been a flurry of activities on the technological/communication front. Big companies, Microsoft, Yahoo, eBay, Bell, Rogers are busy strategically positioning themselves for the next big thing in the internet. VoIP – Voice over IP. Welcome to the future!
- Voice over IP is TELEPHONE OVER THE INTERNET How does it differ against regular telephone? Regular telephone goes through the Public Switched Telephone Network. owned by the big Telco’s Bell, Primus, Telus You pay toll as you move from 1 telco network to another VoIP uses the internet, a free medium, you avoid tolls charges Another main difference is VoIP is digital while PSTN is analog With digital you get the advantages of better quality and more features.
- Voice over IP is Telephone over the internet. There are two basic types. Software based, like Skype, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, where people communicate PC to PC using speakers and microphones. Hardware based using standard phones connected to analog telephone adapters (ATA). Software based is mostly free but both callers have to be on the computer. Communicating with regular phones is normally not available and for some providers that makes it available, the service is no longer free. With hardware based you communicate to regular phones the same way as regular phones.
