2. What is Hypervisor
• A hypervisor or virtual machine
monitor (VMM) is a piece of
computer software, firmware
or hardware that creates and
runs virtual machines.
• Types of Hypervisor
• Native or bare-metal Hypervisor
• hosted hypervisors
3. Xen Introduction
• Xen Project creates a Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) also known as
a hypervisor, this is a software system that allows the execution of
multiple virtual guest operating systems simultaneously on a single
physical machine.
• Xen was initially released by THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE
COMPUTER LABORATORY in 2003.
• It is a free and open-source software.
4. Reasons to use Xen Hypervisor
• Xen offers high performance and secure architecture
• Xen is powered by a growing and active community and a diverse
range of products and services
• Paravirtualization (PV)
• High performance (claim to fame)
• High scalability
• Uses a modified Operating System
5. Xen Hypervisor Requirements
• 64bit x86 computer with at least 1GB of RAM (this can be a server, desktop
or laptop!)
• (Optional) VT-d or AMD-V support
• Sufficient storage space for your dom0 and whatever guests you want to
install
• A CD burner + blank CD (you can use a USB but this is not covered here)
• Internet access for downloading and installing Debian
6. Steps to Install Xen Hypervisor
• Install a 64-bit hypervisor. (A 64-bit hypervisor works with a 32-bit dom0 kernel, but
allows you to run 64-bit guests as well.)
$ sudo apt-get install xen-hypervisor-amd64
7. Steps to Install Xen Hypervisor
• As of Ubuntu 14.04 (GRUB will automatically choose to boot Xen first if Xen is installed. If
you're running a version of Ubuntu before 14.04, you'll have to modify GRUB to default booting
to Xen by using following steps)
• $ sudo sed -i's/GRUB_DEFAULT=.*+/GRUB_DEFAULT="Xen 4.1-amd64"/“
etc/default/grub
8. Steps to Install Xen Hypervisor
• Now Update the GRUB
• $sudo update-grub
9. Steps to Install Xen Hypervisor
• Set the default toolstack to xm
• $ sudo sed -i's/TOOLSTACK=.*+/TOOLSTACK="xm"/" /etc/default/xen
After you get this type of output in window , restart the OS
10. Steps to Install Xen Hypervisor
• And then verify that the installation has succeeded
• $ sudo xl list
11. Steps to Install Xen Hypervisor
• Checking the Xen Hypervisor Info
• $ sudo xm info
12. Xen Hypervisor Installation Completed
This is how you have to install Xen Hypervisor on your Machine
and it is ready to use
Thank you…!!!
