The document proposes using speed bumps on the Port Mann Bridge to generate electricity to power heat tapes on the bridge cables. Ice falling from the cables has caused safety issues by shattering windshields. The solution is to run electricity through heat tapes on the cables to melt ice buildup. Speed bumps could convert kinetic energy from vehicle braking into electricity to power the heat tapes without relying on mainland power. This would save money by lowering toll costs and selling excess energy to the community.
Canadian Solar Heat Pump - Introduction4smartheating
Canadian Solar Heat Pump Institute introduces 4th Gen Solar Heating using Solar PV & Solar Thermal, plus Waste Heat Recovery, and advancements on Ground & Air Source Heat Pumps as a breakthrough in economical space heating and domestic hot water. Economical $1/watt installed, all inclusive Levelized Cost Of Energy $0.04 kWht, under 5 year Payback, and 1 year 100% Return On Investment.
October 2012 Output. Not Enough to Power One Home Reliably (output goes to zero frequently) without conventional generation. For this you pay over 9 cents per KWH wholesale! Conventional generation cannot be replaced because output goes to zero. And your tax dollar subsidizes this worthless energy!

The Solar Tsunami is coming. If you have not been following recent progress, you may be astonished. The price of solar PV cells has fallen 1000-fold since 1977.
(This updates and replaces my older slide-show 'Our Solar Future.")
Hearing the concerns about global warming and knowing our dependency on fossil fuels the solar roadways imagined to develop roadways with solar panels.
This innovation is begun in early 2009 and later the company was established by name Solar Roadways in U.S. and awarded a contract by federal government.
The Solar Roadway is a series of structurally-engineered solar panels that are driven upon.
The idea is to replace all current petroleum based asphalt roads, parking lots, and driveways with Solar Road Panels that collect energy to be used by our homes and businesses.
The ultimate goal is to store excess energy in or along-side the Solar Roadways.

2. Problem
Ice falling off the cables on the Port Mann
Bridge has caused a lot of problems, mainly the
windshield shattering event. This also creates
the risk of getting vehicle damage, as well as
getting caught in a traffic during winter.
3. Solution
The solution we came up is to take use
of the heat tapes. They are
approximately 1 to 2 dollars for several
hundred meters, which is pretty cheap
compared to how much money they
poured into making the new bridge.
Electricity passing through the tape will
cause it to heat up. Which will then melt
the ice that is building up on the cable
during the harsh winter conditions.
4. Economically speaking…
The source of electricity will come from the
mainland, and will use up more electricity. We
want to find a way to make the bridge have its
own power source
To solve this, we have come up with the
idea of using speed bumpers to create the
electricity. By converting the kinetic
energy used during breaks, the energy can
be reused for the purposes of heating up
the tapes.
Fact: with 580 cars passing one bumper can power up a 150 square foot billboard for
the entire day.
5. The Bridge
The Speed Bumpers can be
implemented in the
beginning and the end of
the bridge, and since the
bump is not that great it
will be ok after putting up
a warning sign.
6. Benefits
Before: Tolls: $3 per crossing, overdue charges pay interest of 19% annually.
Twice everyday? Means $6, Per Month(approx. 30 days): $180,
Every Year? Approx. $2160
After: Tolls: $1 per crossing Per Month(approx. 30 days): $60
Every Year? Approx. $720
Saves $1440!
The energy created through the
bumpers will then be sold out to the
community. Which will create money
that can be used during winter to heat
up the cables to prevent ice falls. This
would mean the people will be making
the energy that would be used to heat
the cable, so the price for crossing the
bridge can be cut down.
